My blog

Native Vulnerable Breed Spot

I´ve decided that I´m going to try and have a go at collecting some photographs of the rare breeds of dog living in my area. It´s not going to be easy and I´m slightly hesitant about setting myself this task as I realise it could take years, and I´m going to have to make sure I have my camera with me at all times. I will open a NVB album on my profile page and upload pics as I get them. Wonder if this is a good time to upgrade my camera!

Wish I´d got a photo of the smooth-coated collie when I saw him.

We have a little Manchester Terrier, Sophie, at our training class. She´s just passed her KC Silver Test with Millie, but her owners are doubly proud of her at the mo as she came back from Crufts with two "Seconds" ! She also took a turn on the Discover Dogs stand, and was asked to take part in a photoshoot where she was glammed up with a sparkly necklace - her owner says Sophie loved it, and we´re all looking forward to seeing the photos soon.

Went for a pub lunch yday in our local (well it was my birthday), and couple walked in with a little dog who I´m almost sure is a dandie dinmont. Couldn´t ask them coz was too busy scoffing at the time, but I´ll be looking out for this little dog and hope to see him again.

I must be on a roll! Been out this morning and bumped into a chap with a lovely 18mth old Irish Red & White Setter bitch, so we had a chat and I took a pic on my mobile. I´m just having technical difficulties getting my pics from my mobile into my computer - have tried sending them by email but not working that way for some reason. Anyway, this chap has been told his dog is a lovely example and is being asked to consider breeding a litter from her, so he´s thinking about this. He travelled all the way down to Devon for this dog and was interviewed by the breeder before being allowed to buy her ! Isn´t this just how it should be?!

I had a lovely chat to her owners and they actually hadn´t realised just what a rarity she is. She´s a lovely little thing, very lively and full of fun and I am quite taken with her. There´s also a small chance I may be dog-sitting her soon, in which case I´ll get more pics.

At last I have my first pic of a vulnerable native breed - Millie the Lakeland Terrier - hurrah! Not sure if I´ll get a chance to post it today, it being Mothers Day but will put it up as soon as I can.

Well, this past week I have spotted a Kerry Blue and an Irish Water Spaniel but for one reason or another have been unable to photograph them, so a bit frustrating but at least I know they are here abouts and I shall keep trying to get some nice pics.

What you could do is list the more rarer breeds in the newspaper then if people have friends/relations that have one of these breeds, perhap they will contact you as well. xx

That´s a great idea Tina and I may well give that a try. I´m expecting the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier and the Cardigan Corgi to be fairly easy as I do see those quite regularly. The others might prove a bit trickier though. I´ll have to have a look on the KV NVB list as there are also a few others around that aren´t very common. I met a lady with a Lakeland Terrier a few weeks back and we walked together for a bit and there´s also a Wire Haired Fox Terrier about as I´ve seen him/her walking to school. I really love the Irish Water Spaniel though so hoping to spot him/her too - such a great character.

Thats a great idea Jacqui, to help you why don´t you get in touch with your local paper telling them what you are trying to do & invite people with rare breeds to meet you in a park, so you can take photos of their dogs. (it may be wise to take someone with you & also email the photo to owner of dogs) x

What a fantastic idea Jacqui, cant wait to see pics. It may take some time to do but it will be worth it in the end, just keep thinking of of all these wonderful dogs you will have a photo of. Good luck in your task xxxxxxxxxxxx
