Comments Post a comment in this discussion: 01 Oct 2008 07:01 I am sure that many people will have seen the BBC programme about pedigree dogs shown recently. These are my comments posted on another forum: The Kennel Club has all the power they need to stop irresponsible breeding: they can refuse to issue Pedigrees to negligent breeders. Without a Pedigree the dogs cannot be shown. Many people will not buy pedigree dogs without the KC´s official Pedigree. End of breeder´s ability to show or sell. I´m sure we all know people who have found their pedigree puppies to have some genetic problem and have, in all innocence, contacted the breeder to inform them of their discovery. The breeder will tell them "I´ve never had that in one of my dogs before". The owner, knowing full-well that this is probably an out-and-out lie and frustrated at the response, then contacts the KC - imagining that they will be interested. Wrong. All that the KC is interested in is collecting the fees for issuing Pedigrees. It´s the 21st century. Computer data is commonplace. It would not be in the least difficult for the KC to generate a system of recording complaints against breeders and a system for investigating that breeder with a view to (a) witholding Pedigrees and (b) informing potential buyers of the complaints registered. The KC in many European countries do this as a matter of course, and have done so for many years, which is why so many people who know a particular breed well are rigorous in investigating the family lines of potential purchases so that they can be sure that the pups are from a line brought in from Europe. It is also, perhaps, not such a good idea to have so many breeders as show Judges and officers of the Kennel Club. The words "poacher" and "gamekeeper" spring to mind. In addition, I think that many people are wondering why the Kennel Club has not been more active in encouraging breeders NOT TO DOCK tails. Breed descriptions and advice to Judges should be far more specific about the requirement to give preference to dogs who have not had their tail amputated. |
