I always thought it was because they twitch the curtains while watching them from the house !

"Twitchers" because they used to hide behind bushes and move the branches out of the way.....
"Anoraks" because that is what they wear(it's cold on a station platform....)(and it has now become a generic word for a person with an obsessive interest in something..)
Does that help?

I have no idea but I was a 'Twitcher' for an hour yesterday when I took the time to sit and watch the birds in my garden as part of the RSPB Birdwatch Survey which is held on the 26th and 27th January and is a really good and pleasant survey to do.
I've been doing it for the last 4 years and really enjoy just watching which birds actually come's into my garden and what they do,it's well fascinating.....but still I've no idea why bird watchers are called 'Twitchers' or trainspotter's called 'Anoraks'.
