Kidney Failure

I have found out today my cat Thomas has got kidney failure :o(
I am in bits as he is such a special little baby to me, i dunno what i will do when his time comes :o(
The vet said it's reasonably early stages and has precribed tablets and the special food.
What i'd love to hear are any stories of cats out there who have been diagnosed with kidney failure but with medication have gone on ok for years after :o)

Please someone give me hope
Hayley

Hi all,

Thanks for all your responses :o)
I'm feeling a bit better about things cos i went back to the vets for a chat as i didn't feel she gave me enough info when i first found out. She says Tom's results aren't too bad and with the pills and diet he should be fine for a while yet. I know he will get ill and I am prepared for it, me and Tom are just taking it a day at a time and enjoying our fusses and loves :o)

Hello

Our last cat Charlie had kidney failure and he survived about 5 years after we first found out. At first we just had to change his diet and eventually he had an injection once a month which he had during the last 18 months of his life. He did change with not being able to jump up and towards the end you could see he had become an old man. He was 17 when he died, so he had had a long life. I don;t know how old your Thomas is but I am sure you will have him for several years yet..

Best wishes to you and Thomas

What a shame , Hayley. Well I am sure the tablets wont do Thomas any harm and if he is eating and not in pain , you never know. My cat Woody has had a few problems with cystitis and urine infections and he was a very sickly kitten but he is 10 now and quite healthy for his age.Like Mary says,it has been caught early and he may suprise you.

Sorry to read about poor Thomas,Hailey.
At least it has been caught early and you are doing all that you can for him under veterinary advice........sadly,I don't know myself about any cat's who have had kidney failure and been OK for years on medication.....only that I've known two cats in the last 6 months,to have been diagnosed with it (in it's extreme and late stage) and they haven't lasted long at all.
But take heart that you are doing everything right by the vet and for Thomas and maybe some other members whom have been or are in the same situation as yourself, can offer you some brighter and positive hope and advice.
Just love him, spoil him and do all that you can for him.....he may just surprise you!.....take care and all the very best.
