In relation to annes comment, my amazon parrot crouches, fans his tail and pins his eyes when hes excited and when hes being amourous, he screams and runs away before attempting to bite. How can two birds of the same species act so differently?

i used to cut off a fruit tree limb drill a hole thro and attach to cage so could climb up and down it or cut in to chuncks and put on natural rope (food color sounds good.) for them to peck on. metal and plastic can break there beaks so be carful parrot toys still have it on them. i was told by a parrot rescue you should treat them as a child. tuck them up at night(blanket over cage) turn out the light, wake them in the morn. give them food. same time every day. ours likes half a digestive in the morn and if she does not get it she bits every one for the rest of the day (i dont know if they are ment digestives) they also like a little hot tea no milk or sugar.

Hi, how wonderful that you are bringing an Amazon into your life, they are wonderful, wonderful parrots! She will most likely appreciate an assortment of colourful wooden toys to chew on. A VERY cheap way of provoding wooden chew toys for you amazon is to buy a pack of wooden dolly pegs, and about three different colours of food colouring, and die the pegs! My ammie used to love her wooden pegs! She also loved those big, brightly coloured plastic pegs, the ones without a metal spring in. As well as a good quality parrot food, she will need her fruits and vegatables. With the veggies she will let you know if she prefers them raw or cooked! Apple is often a firm favourite, but make sure it is peeled, and all pips removed. Apple pips can poison a parrot. A pomegranite chopped in half is often appreciated too! Mashed sweet potato/yams are often liked.
The Orange Wing Amazon is known as one of the 'Hot three'' in the Amazon species. The can be unpredictable, especially during hormonal season, and can lunge and bite for seemingly no reason at all. This can be dealt with quite well if you learn to 'read' your Ammie. If she crouches and fans her tail out, this is often a warning ''get lost cos Im in the mood to bite you!'' Eye pinning can also be a pre-bite warning (The pupils of the eyes dilate and undilate at speed) An amazon bite hurts, as does any parrot bite, but learning to take the bites and NOT blaming the bird, and learning to read you bird and avoid the bites is all part of parrot ownership.
Amazons often ADORE a shower! Even a good misting with a plant mister is usually loved. The misting or showering helps the amazon greatly in its feather care.
Give the bird time to get to know you when she first arrives, dont push her too much, let her tell you when she is ready for you to hold her, and allow her time to get to know you well and trust you.
I hope this helps, if theres anything else you would like to know, ask away!
