I find they are better kept in pairs as they are less likely to fight.

cheers guys i am getting the hand of them now, i did keep chinchillas so its not to different. socially though; i have 4 males intogether about 8 weeks old, they are beginning to scrap so have allowed more resources such as food and hides, should i keep the boys in 2´s or keep them in a 4?

degu need a special diet as they cant have any sugar but there isnt really any degu foods about iv only found one place that sales some. most people make up there foods with a mixture of chin pellets and gp food. they cant have fruit. their are some good sites with lots of information. they need lots of space as they like to run and jump about, should be kept in pairs or more. also like chin they will chew anything and everything so you have to be carefull about what you put in there cage.
there are great animals i havent got any at the min but im getting some on sunday two males and i cant wait

I have no real personal experience of degus but they do have some at raystede - they appear to be really nice little animals! the ones at raystede come running to the front of the cage when you go to clean them out - was worried at first that they would try to escape but they were just coming to see what i was up to! they seem to be quite active too. unfortunately i have noticed that they are becoming increasingly popular in pet shops too but it seems that there is not an awful lot of knowledge out there about them to be passed on to the new owners! from what i can see, they need quite large enclosures even though they are quite small and i just wonder what kind of housing is recommended when people buy them from petstores.. feel fairly sure it is probably not really adequate!
