A Letter from a Disgruntled Man from Perranporth,Cornwall.

´Noah Should Have Left Dogs Out of the Ark.

With reference to J Hughes "Let dogs share the beach" letter (June 3) dogs should be permanently banned from all beaches. They are public enemy No 1 - not seagulls, who grace the skies with their aerobatics, ingenuity, audacity and haunting cries. Cornwall would be a poorer place without gulls - but without barking, yapping, vicious and messing dogs it would be a far better place.

Dogs regularly foul our beautiful beaches, pathways, greens and every public place with their excrement. Every day tonnes of it is deposited across the country. It is unsightly, unhygienic and a major health hazard as it can contain parasites which can and have caused blindness.Small children playing in the sand invariably get it on their shoes, clothing and hands. Mothers have thrown away good shoes because they can´t get the wretched stuff off. Most owners couldn´t care a damn. They are quite content for their little darlings to mess anywhere as long as it is not on their own doorstep.

Why should we put up with dogs fouling our beaches and exposing our children to horrible diseases? A lot of the British are besotted with their dogs. Some even treat them better than their own children.

Every year there are cases of vicious dogs attacking and killing small children; every year thousands of postmen and members of the public are bitten. Some dogs bark incessantly, disturbing the peace and threatening the public. It would have been better for us all if Noah had left them out of the Ark. Why should some 90 per cent of us have to put up with them?

Dogs may be good news for vets but bad for the public. Recently a King Charles spaniel snapped up some bacon used as bait on a fish hook; unfortunately it swallowed the hook as well and it cost some £160 for the vet to extract it.

My daughter recently watched a woman sharing her ice cream with her dog, taking it in turns to have a lick. Dog owners sometimes allow their pets to lick them all over their face - hardly hygienic when one considers where they put their snout. The truth is, we are not all enamoured of dogs.

I read this letter today in my local daily newspaper and couldn´t believe what I read.....this is the comment that is a follow up to his first letter (some weeks ago) about how he hated dogs being on the beach particularly with them being banned throughout the season. His letter back then oozed animosity and venom but not everybody is a dog lover..so at first,I just accepted his complaint as someone who is against dogs on a beach.

However another reader took umbridge against his first letter and wrote in a couple or so weeks ago with their own views and opinions on that matter and today the original complainer came back with that!....he isn´t just against dogs on the beach..he is a serious anti-dog person.
Read his letter and make your own mind´s up.....but I think you´ll see things the way most dog lovers will.

I live in Blackpool, and there is a greaty beach where we are allowed to walk our dogs. I always pick up after my two, and so do the other dog owners. What makes our beach a mess is the people who come on to the beach with their pinics, bottles, and other rubbish, which they don´t pick up. The amount of glass and litter on the beach is terrible, and poses a real health hazzard. My son was playing on the dunes with one of our dogs, as they were running down this dune he disturbed large bits of a glass bottle that was under the sand. Thank goodness he didn´t hurt himself. So instead of blaming dogs, and their owners take a step back, and look at what people do to our lovely beaches!

re-disgruntled [wales]
firstly if there is dog mess on your beach then campaign the council to have a specified area for the dogs to run and stop painting all dog owners with the same brush it is a MINORITY of dog owners who do not clean up after their dogs,

secondly I hardly think you would be so anti dog if [heaven forbid] someone was attacking you and a Dog faught the assailant off you, or another dog was being aggressive towards you or a member of your family and another dog faught that one off, would you really be so anti dog then knowing that in both of those scenarios it could actually be one of those "detested dogs" that saves you / family mamber from serious injury or even death!

and as far as your cooing over seagulls they make more mess than dogs do they poo all over everything and I would not consider for one moment their screaching call as soothing and harmonious! they are agressive, I can´t count how many times I have taken my children to the beach just to end up having to take them indoors to eat because the seagulls were trying to steal their food and they would have bitten my kids given half the chance,

so dear disgruntled [wales] get your head out of the sand, God put every living creature [and yes that does include dogs] on this earth for a reason and who are you to challenge his reasoning?

DescriptionSadly this sad person may have his wish of dogs being banned from beaches, as more and more beaches are banning dogs completely. As for vicious dogs killing children, it would be interesting to compare the number of children killed by dogs ,compared to the number killed by one of there own family !!!
The more l see of people,
The more l like my DOGS. !!!

Firstly for some bizarre reason....the Editor has become the poster of this topic but just for those that don´t know....I posted this originally earlier and I can agree both with Margaret and Brian on their comments below regarding this man in Perranporth.

I was so incensed after submitting this earlier on that I wrote and left my own comments on the subject via the newspapers own comment board on it´s website and have said that humans leave more waste, rubbish and filth around our coastlines and that it´s not the dogs fault..it´s the irresponsible owners.
I also added that why did he also not wish that all vicious and aggressive humans should have been left out of the Ark and then maybe the world would have been a far better place generally...I was really mad about this person.....not because he is anti-dog but his whole attitude and aggressive stance on the matter.....and YES Margaret, seagulls are a huge problem around many beach/coastal area´s and villages...infact many local Councils have signs all around asking people not to feed nor encourage the birds because of their savage attacks and launches when tourists/visitors have food like pasties or ice creams,etc.....some people are beyond belief at times aren´t they !!.

Why not ban everything from all beaches, that way we can all stand well back and remark on how beautiful they are?Would have been an interesting proposition on D-Day,etc......
Seriously, though, there are more damaging things on beaches than dogs (people and their detritus, for starters). It is all down to the responsibility of the person(s) behaving appropriately and in accordance with whatever by-laws and statutes are in place.
This gentleman has an obvious problem with dogs, and I think any attempt at reasonable discussion or debate would be futile.

I am anti people, but I haven´t suggested banning them. I also do not like small children; can we ban them from the beach! They usually have runny noses, scream a lot and then there are those awful parents who let them go in the sea with their nappies on! Or don´t bother to change them when they are stinking the beach out. You very often see a lost child on beaches and when you find their owners, they are fast asleep somewhere. Unfortunately, it is people who do leave their dog mess around and assume that everybody loves their dog who give the rest of us a bad name. I would never allow my dog to mess on a beach, nor would I leave it there if he did. If I thought for one moment there was any likelihood of him being vicious, he would never be off his lead. I know that most of us on here are same. Personally, I would get rid of the seagulls - they are vicious and you cannot eat on a beach without having a swarm of them around you. I am terrified of birds, anyway, so I never, ever eat on a beach. Sounds to me like he ought to get a life!
