Should I treat for fleas?

I was asked this really great question by Lianne,

Question

Even though both my dogs haven´t got fleas, do you still recommend fleaing them?

Answer

I think at this time of year it always a good idea to treat pets against fleas, even if you don´t think they have any. The fleas are very active in the environment in the warmer weather and are more than keen to jump onto your pets. Prevention is a lot better than cure, especially if you end up with them in the house!

It is not always possible to tell if your pet has fleas. Cats will often groom out any evidence of fleas, such as flea dirt, before you get a chance to spot it. Some dogs are very itchy with flea bites, but others are less bothered, so even if they are not scratching it doesn´t mean they don´t have them! Also, remember when cats are itchy, they do not scratch like dogs, they lick, so the same applies to them as well.

Ask the vet for some flea spot-ons, not only will they kill the fleas, often before they even bite your pet, but they often have action against the eggs and larvae, so it any do make it into your house, they will be killed. There is usually either 3 or 4 pipettes in each box, so you should have enough to see you though the summer months.
