A Dog´s PrayerI am currently reading "Winning Is Not Enough" by (Sir) Jackie Stewart (Former 3 x World Champion Racing Driver). In the chapter "Part Of My Soul" he descries the closeness he has with his dogs, especially when the time comes to make "that decision" (my quote marks). He includes this poem:- "If it should be that I grow weak And pain should keep me from my sleep Then you must do what must be done For this last battle cannot be won You will be sad,I understand Don´t let grief stay your hand For this day more than all the rest Your love for me must stand the test We,ve hadso many happy years What is to come can hold no fears Tou´d not want me to suffer so The time has come, please let me go Take me where my need they´ll tend And please stay with me till the end Hold me firm and speak to me Until my eyes no longer see I know in time that you will see The kindness that you did for me Although my tail it´s last has waved From pain and suffering,I´ve been saved Please do not grieve,it must be you Who has this painful thing to do We´ve been so close,we two, these years, Don´t let your heart hold back it´s tears" From the topic: Comments Post a comment in this discussion: 28 Sep 2008 13:28 wow... my eyes have filled up with tears!... brings it all back to me the decision i had to make with my little dasiy, the kindest thing but heartbreaking also, she was my baby but i had no choice as she was deterioating fast with her battle with kidney disease... just couldnt let her suffer! the word in the poem are so true! 08 Aug 2008 16:33 Hi Brian l have had this poem for many years, the version i have is the same and was written for Della a much loved, beautiful GSD bitch whose owner, because of her incurable illness, had to make the heartbreaking decision to have her put to sleep to save further suffering. The title is -´´lf lt Should Be´´ Authors-Bach & Offenbach. l still cry each time i read it.
