how much food should my 8month old puppy be eating?Hi everyone Hope you all had a great summer. I have a beautiful 8 month Cavalier King Charles Spaniel I am very confused on how much food she should be eating. Some people say 2 times a day and some say once a day, she weighs approx. 12 to 13 pounds and eats 2 meals a day of dry food (Royal Canin) total amount is about 1 1/2 cups a day. Is this too much or should I cut down, if you can please let me know the total amount she should eat in a day I would greatly appreciate it. Have a great day Thankyou Josie My little angels name is Priscilla :) From the topic: Comments Post a comment in this discussion: 26 Aug 2008 16:10 Hey Josie, we have a 4 month old Cavalier KC who is fed 3 times a day with pedigree canned puppy food and rice pudding. He has only recently started finishing every meal (he always finishes his rice pudding!). We wondered if until now, when he´s a bit bigger and goes out and about more, we were maybe feeding him too much! This is the portion size pedigree recommend (i.e. 1 can a day, split into 2 meals + rice pudding at supper)... My advise is to check what your food supplier recommends and if you´re worried, check with your vet. Otis has been weighed every time he´s gone to the vets, and it´s a great comfort to hear the vet say he´s the correct weight for his age, even when he´s not finishing what he´s given! 23 Aug 2008 14:14 I´m with Vena , that´s how i fed my boys, but then they are a little larger than yours, It´s not good for my breed to have an empty tum, so as soon as they are 12mths they go to 2 x a day. 23 Aug 2008 13:02 Clio is 4 years old and up until very recently ate twice a day. Now she completely ignores her breakfast and will not start to eat until about 6.30pm. I have now started giving her the same amount but in one ,meal rather than two. 22 Aug 2008 16:55 Personally i feed puppies 4 meals a day up till they are 6mths, then i go onto 3 meals till they are 12mths, then i continue to feed 2 meals a day, but that is your preference,as for quantity its very difficult to give an exact amount,i usually go by how quickly its eaten and by eye, you should be able to tell by her body-weight. 22 Aug 2008 16:42 You will have a measurement chart on the side of the bag, which will tell you how much you should be giving him and how many times. A lot of people advocate feeding twice a day, whilst others only feed once. It does depend very much on the breed. With my dogs, I always go by the adage that if he finishes every meal, give him a little more next time. On the other hand, my retriever was a dog who, if you kept feeding him, he would keep eating! I would follow the manufacturers guide and feed him twice a day. |
