The poor old pigeon never fares well, I have seen them with fishing line wrapped around their legs and also some with one foot.

Its really upsetting when we see nature in action sometimes, many times I tried to get help for injured birds and im told t leave well alone.Livng near the beach I often round up injured birds but no one is ever really interested. One time my husband and I climbed over a beach wall to rescue a badly injured swan we took it home and spca did come out for that but common birds they dont seem to care very much.

what a shame Ami that you were subjected to tirade from that nurse. You did the best you could for the dove and that nurse is definitely barking up the wrong tree!! That poor dove would have been pecked to death if you hadn´t stepped in and instead he had a peaceful end to his life!! I would write a letter to the vet in charge and report her. it is a shame that you are having to change your vets beacuse of her!!To accuse you of trying to keep the dove as a pet is diabolical. I am glad that you have a number for a vet that does free call outs for wildlife, that is good news. I just hope that you do not have to go through anything so traumatic again.

the vets wasn´t a charity one the nurse in question does work for oak and furrows rescue centre in the cotswolds who i now have a contact for if this sort of thing happens again and seeing as its a 365acre estate it could well happen, it might not be there opinion but it just seemed that she was definitely on one and its a shame because that sort of attitude towards people can really put them off wanting to help. i have calmed down but like anyone elae i was furious it really felt like i was being ganged up on by vetinary nurses haha. but seriously if you can educate someone on how to help wildlife rather than scaring off people then that is surely better. in her mind i am sure that she is passionate about what she does and genuinely wants to help but no one can do it on there own. i just know that i could never witness an animal being hurt by nature or human and not act and the more knowledge i can gain the more i can do. the most important thing is that the dove had a dignified ending after such trauma.

Hi Ami....thank you for updating us here about the Dove and I´m sorry that the outcome was as we thought it may have been but at least it was put to sleep painlessly.

You don´t name the vet´s (of course) but you mention that it´s a Charity based one.....would you please be willing to name this charity..you don´t have to say the branch or practice, just the charity,as I think the veterinary nurse was out of order for talking to you in such a manner, when you was only doing what you thought AND was right.

You did everything that I too have read and been taught when dealing with wildlife and (myself not being able to drive) appreciate how hard it is,to get out and about, especially at night,to search for an emergency vet (unless you know one already).
Anyway..what´s done is done and as far as I am concerned, you did the right thing by the bird and your doing the right thing in changing your vet too.
Don´t be too upset by this.....just move on and put this veterinary practice down as a ´No Go´!.

hello i took the dove to the vets she was still alive in the morning remarkebly and had drunk water and pooed so the signs were good the. the vetinary nurse told me that unfortunately her eyes had been pecked out so the best action was to put her to sleep fair enough i did my best as did they and the bird got a dignified ending which is something that we can all hope for in the end. this nurse then turned around to me and said that she works for a bird charity and that she feels that my actions were cruel towards the bird and what right did i have to treat a wild animal as a pet, i was shocked i followed all the guidelines about injured birds and what to do from various bird charity websites. she then continued to tell me the bird should of been put out of its misery yesterday and why did i not do this well i live in the middle of no where and i don´t drive and i couldn´t find anyone to contact who would collect the bird apart from the rspb who said they wouldn´t what did she want me to do take a shovel and do it myself first of all thats illegal and i couldn´t do that anyway. i was so shocked at this negative attitude i don´t claim to be a bird expert but i know enough that you shouldn´t handle them or only whats neccessary and that most injured birds die at the hands of there rescuers because they don´t know the relavent information or they start treating it as a pet but that was not my choices i felt i did the appropriate thing only to be told off and talked down to. you charities want our money and support but when we come to you with something that needs your help we get told we are being cruel its a joke. but i have now got the number of a vet who does 24 hour call outs for wildlife free of charge so i guess something positive came out of it. none the less i will be registering my dog with a different vet this week

nature can be so cruel, hope the poor dove is not suffering, it is prob in shock. Hope you find a vet nearby ,I would have done the same as you and put it in a box in the quiet.

You´ve done the next very best thing in putting the dove into a dark quiet box and allowing it access to water, until you can get it to your vet tomorrow morning...by the sound´s of it,the outcome doesn´t look very bright for the poor bird but if you can keep it comfortable until you can get it to the vets, then that´s the main thing.

Most vet´s will take in and treat wildlife for nothing and it is only nature when carrion species attack other´s......it´s not pleasant especially for the victims but that is the vicious nature of life at times.

Hopefuly, the dove may successfully recover and be able to be re-released..do please keep us posted on here as to what happens to it and well done in your overnight instant care!....excellent stuff.
