Guinea Pig Bleeding

Hi there I took one of my guinea pigs to the vet in April with vaginal bleeding, the vet said that she had a tumour in a kidney and that the prognosis wasn´t good. She gave her strong antibiotics but didn´t hold out much hope of her surviving. She has now carried on for another months and is now 5 years old. However, this week when I picked her up on Monday there was blood stained mucus coming out of her, which then stopped. For the following two days there were the odd spots in the hutch but today there are no signs of it but she has started coughing. Do you think that this is unfortunately the end, should I take her to the vet as soon as possible or leave it to see what happens. Your advice would be very much appreciated. Thank you, Kind regards, Keren

Another member has asked if it is certain that guinea pigs do bleed when in season. I am not sure.

Thank you to both of you for your comments, at the moment you would never know there had ever been anything wrong with her, she´s happy, eating extremely well and no sign of bleeding at present, it´s a complete puzzle. Thank you again, Keren

Hi Keren,

I definitely think you should take her to the vets, she sounds like she might be quite poorly. However, she has obviously done well over the past 6 months, given your vets poor outlook in April. There are many reasons why she may be bleeding and your vet should be able to tell you what is going on. There is no doubt that she is old for a Guinea Pig and the problems she has may well be serious. There comes a point in every animal owners life when you have to take a step back and seriously consider your pets quality of life and whether you should let them carry on. You, sadly, may be at this point with your pig, but you may not, and your vet will be able to help you decide and answer any questions you may have.

Have a look in my blog at the piece I wrote about euthanaisa, it is as relevant to smaller pets as it is to dogs and cats and it may help you.

All the best,

Cat
