New & Seeking Advice

Hey Everyone,

I´m new to PetStreet, i found the site whilst scanning the net for advice about my (3yr) JRT, Dillon.
It a nut shell Jack Russell Terriers usually have a very black ring around their eyes. Over the last week or 2 Dillons eyes have become more dry and grey. There´s no discharge and he doesn´t seem uncomfortable or in discomfort but there´s a clear change and i´m a little concerned.
Can anyone help?

Hi Daisy,

Welcome to PetStreet! I think the best thing to do is to take Dillon to your vet and ask them to take a look at him. It is difficult from your description to say exactly what is going on, but the time frame is concerning, usually simple problems clear up, or get much worse, in two weeks. Also, when you say the black ring around his eyes is grey, do you mean on the eyeball itself, or the skin around it?

As for what the cause of the changes could be, there are a lot is possibilities. If it is the eye itself that is the problem it could be something simple and easy to treat like a conjunctivitis or corneal ulcer (although both these conditions tend to be painful), to more complex problems like cataracts ( which will give the pupil a white, ghostly appearance) or ´Dry eye´, which is when the eye stops producing enough tears. If the changes are to the skin around the eyes then there is a parasite called ´Demodex´ which often infects the skin in this area. It causes the fur to fall out and the skin to become slightly flaky but it is not particularly itchy. It can be treated with certain veterinary spot-ons or washes.

Pop Dillon to the vet and ask them to examine him. Do let us know how to get on.
