What age was your oldest guinea pig?Hi there With so many of you owning Guinea Pigs I just wondered what age the oldest had lived to. There is so much information which differs regarding piggies life expectancy and now that my two oldest are 5 years old, I just wondered. Thanks for your help. She became partly blind when she was 9. about 2 months before she was 11 she started going downhill. 2 days b4 she was 11 she was squeeling loudly when she moved and she had a lump on her hip we took her to the vet and they said it was more than likely to be a tumor so we had her put to sleep. 11 Nov 2008 08:52 Description When any of mine have gone, I´ve put them back with their friends for a few minutes and, without exception, they have all gone over to the body and nuzzled, sniffed & licked. Ginny Pig (my girl who I lost unnecessarily from botched vet treatment) used to get in the cuddle cup with the ´deceased´ & lick the ears & eyes so gently while making a little ´murmuring´ sound. It is so moving and so respectful of the friend they have lost. 10 Nov 2008 14:46 Hi Rosie, sorry hadn´t seen your reply to now. I know what you mean, Honey passed away on Saturday and she was in the run with Ginger at the time. Ginger hasn´t mourned her at all, it´s like she´s already said her goodbyes and moved on. Why can´t we cope with things so easily? Honey was just over 5 when she went across Rainbow Bridge. 08 Nov 2008 08:54 Description I like to think she had a good life Keren... lazing around in the sun, playing with her friends, chasing a hay ball around, plenty of food, free health care, no bills or mortgage worries.....!!!! There was a huge gap in the herd when she went - like the losing the ´queen mother´.. I was told many years ago that when a gp dies, it´s important that the rest of the group know so if ever you have someone pts pop him/her back in with his/her friends for a few minutes so that they know. You will be surprised what they do - it´s very moving to see. 02 Nov 2008 17:24 Thanks for this Mary, it´s really interesting to hear what ages they live too. I also agree with Dazie about the breeding and care, I can´t help with the breeding but hopefully due to their care (and being spoilt), they´ll live to a ripe old age. Keren x 02 Nov 2008 11:05 When I had G.Pigs, the oldest a lovely black sow, lived to about 6 yrs....but I had a friend whose G.Pig lived to just gone 9 yrs,so I agree with Dazie´s comment below, that it is likely down to breeding and above all,how they are cared for and what their diets are like!. |
