WON´T EAT NORMALLY

I have a Springer Spaniel who has got very finicky about her food, she used to be easy to feed but now she won´t eat the foods we have normally fed her, the only way we can get her to eat is if we actually hand feed her, has anyone got any suggestions what to do.

Has there been any improvement yet Shirley? Is she on any medication for her pulled muscle? That might be making her feel a bit poorly perhaps? I feed mine Burns and although they are thriving on it, I don´t think it has much taste (no, I haven´t tried it!) Every week I give them a little oily fish and I often replace some for raw green veg. hope she´s back to her ususal self soon xx

My dogs sometimes decide that they dont want their food, so i always keep tins of sardines in the house, they both love the sardines in oil, and in tomato sauce, also, dont overdue the treats, that stops them from eating their food. good luck

Hand feeding is no good for her at all. Dogs have to go and find their own food, or they don´t want it. That´s why they should always be fed in their own place in their own bowl. Certainly mix in a bit of tuna and oil. I bet she will gobble it up.

could be she is protesting at being left.l have never known a dog that doesn´t like Green Tripe, you can get it in free flow packs, so can just take out amount required if all else fails.

Thanks Vena and Mary for your info. Vena you asked if there might be something that could have triggered it off, the only thing I can think of is the fact that I run a Pet Service business and Cassie is out with me most of the day but the last 6 days she has been at home resting due to her pulling a muscle while we were walking clients dogs.

Nothing worse than finicky eater´s..I´ve had one once in the past and boarded a couple too....Vena´s advice is very good below,so try as she suggest´s and do try and avoid the hand feeding too if you can,as she also suggest´s.

With my fussy pooche´s,I´ve had success encouraging them to eat by either mixing in a little tin fish such as sardines or pilchards in tomato sauce (anything fishy and smelly normally work´s) or sprinkling over a Bovril or Oxo cube, again anything particularly appetitising both to smell and taste.

Soemtime´s dogs (like us) just quickly go off foods and it can be a case of not buying in too much of one thing and moving onto something new when they go through this phase...it is annoying to say the least but persistance normally pay´s off and when hungry enough, she should be happy to eat anything......all the best with her now!.

l strongly advise not hand feeding, l had a friend in the same situation, she hand fed for a while ,and from then on the dog refused to eat, so was force fed the rest of her life.
ls there anything you can think of, that has triggered this behaviour off. ls she seeking attention ? Do you feed once or twice daily ?
Hard l know, but have you tried starving her for a couple of days ? Put her food down if not eaten in 15mins remove it, leave till evening try again, if not eaten in 15mins take it away, don´t give any titbit´s ect: then try the next day.
You could try adding a little Tuna in Sunflower oil to her food, that might help.
