Monkeys?

Are there any monkey owners here then?

My Mother has had a Capuchin for about 18yrs now since she rescued her from an unsuitable home... she could not be released into a zoo or sanctuary as she doesn´t thinks that she´s human having been reared domestically since a baby.

To own a Capuchin monkey you have to apply to your local Council Authority for a DWA (Dangerous Wild Animal) licence which will cost you between 3-500 depending on your Borough Council - you will also need to pay public liability insurance of around a further £150.
Monkeys are not ideal pets - you only have to look at the Chimp in the US that went beserk after 15yrs living in a domestic situation to see why this is.
Monkeys can bite - that is why they are listed under the DWA Act.
If you own a licenced monkey you may not be able to have a holiday while it is in your charge - and some can live for upto 40years!

have you visited monkey sanctuary, cornwall. they have capuchins there and listening to some of the stories the keeper told us it was heart breaking to hear. to keep an animal like a capuchin you really need to no what your doing, not an animal i would suggest keeping.think i´ll stick to cats

As with any animal, you have to find out what you´re taking on. Capuchins are wild animals so it´s difficult (though not impossible) to replicate their natural environment in captivity. They arent ´pets´ as such and, depending on the species, should have company of their own kind.

It´s one hell of a commitment to take on a capuchin & all credit to Rubys mum for doing so..

As cute as they are I wouldnt have one what a commitment that would be 40 years trying to keep the little monkey out of trouble lol

There are one or two Primate owner´s on here (or were)...but I´m not sure if they still visit this site anymore.....but you never know...somebody may see this post and be such a keeper of one or two unusual pet´s (LOL)!.
