C-DOGI am wondering if PetStreet should try to set up a campaign for Dog Owning Responsibly (or something like that). I ask because there is a growing tide of anti-dog sentiment - all dog owners are being tarred by the same brush when it is the few irresponsible owners who give us all a bad name. Isn´t it time the responsible dog owners stood up against the people who are doing us so much harm? We could have a charter of aims and a distinguishing badge, collar or tag that showed we cared about things like cleaning up, proper training and socialising, obtaining a dog from a responsible source, and bringing the best out of our dogs rather than the worst? If it took off we might have some influence to try to change attitudes and regulations so the irresponsible owners were targeted, not the responsible ones. Would there be any support for this? Councillor: "Ban dogs from our parks" Wednesday 25th February 2009 A COUNCILLOR has called for dogs to be banned from “filthy” Risborough parks to stop them fouling playing fields. Eunice Clifford made the suggestion at last night´s meeting of Princes Risborough Town Council. She said: “Our parks are in a filthy state – and I mean filthy. “Young kids are playing there all the time. The footballers are having to clear before they begin their games. “If the situation doesn´t improve in a very short space of time then I think we should ban dogs from our parks altogether.” However, Cllr John Coombs said that enforcing this would require a by-law to be passed – a lengthy process requiring Government approval. He said: “What we need to do is name and shame people who allow their dogs to do this.” He suggested that members of the public take photographs of dog walkers leaving their animals´ mess in parks. These photos could them be sent to the council for publication in its Crosstalk magazine. But Cllr Carl Etholen said that there were legal problems with this, including the risk of libel. Another suggestion was to encourage members of the public to inform the council of any dog fouling. The council could then send out a rebuking letter to the dog´s owner. Alan Turner, town mayor, said: “We do have to encourage people to either approach people or at least grass them up.” A final suggestion by Cllr Will Streule was to put up a sign informing people that parks are monitored by CCTV and dog fouling carries a maximum penalty of a £2,000 fine. 26 Feb 2009 21:25 What a great idea well done to the dog warden and the caradogs, hope it catches on round the country. 26 Feb 2009 19:42 Vikki the classes my vet does is free as long as you have vaccinations worming and flea treatment from them. I have actually just read in my local paper that the dog warden has been to the local primary school with some dogs to raise awareness. The children were taught hygine, how to look after a dog, what to do if they come accross a stray, and rescuing dogs. There is now a group doing this called Caradogs who are trained education dog sand have visited 3.500 children in the caradon area. I think that is fantastic and should be done in more places. 26 Feb 2009 19:13 I think thats a brilliant idea ED and i´d be in on it. Local councils would be a good way to start as they are all too aware of the growing *problem owners* around at the moment,im talking about the clueless fools who harbour certain breeds and wouldnt dream of picking up thier dogs poo or putting thier dog on a leash. I´d like a badge saying "im not one of those local pricks who doesnt pick up my dogs poo* Breeds aside,i went to a small dog park recently and the entire area was completley covered in dog crap, how hard is it to pick up the poo and put it in one of the many bins available??,i know of a few people who have dogs and ask me how can i pick it up...WTF!,its part and parcel of dog ownership and i agree ED that alot of people are getting fed up with dogs and thier owners due to the actions of a few iresponsible *should not be* owners. 25 Feb 2009 18:45 the thing is its expensive going to these classes i remember askin my vet for local classes there r not many in my area and what was about i couldn´t afford it everything is going up the other month i brought dog food a cat collar and 3 tags it cost me 70 odd quid. i think iyts a great idea 2 meet up with other dog owners and something like a neighbourhood watch but for dogs as long as it´s done freely maybe get sponsors. Just a few small ideas 25 Feb 2009 09:47 iI´m not sure if this would work but i know alot of vet practises do a puppy class/socialisation/basics of owning a dog for clients. I wonder if some would be prepared to do a talk on responsibility in dog ownership etc with leaflets info and people can ask questions etc? I mentioned it to our vets and they thought it was a good idea, also having a group of bull breeds meet up once a month is hopefully going to be on the cards. |
