Akita´sSince joining PS and seeing Vena´s beautiful dogs i had not seen/heard much about Akita´s, then i joined a rescue forum and seen liads needing foster/rescue spaces, i didn´t think there were very many but i stand corrected. I was hoping (smiles nicely) that Vena and any other Akita owners a would tell me all about them temperment, exercise, training needs etc, I dont know if i would own but but i am just interested in finding out some more! Thanks in advance From the topic: Comments Post a comment in this discussion: 04 Jul 2010 23:11 Hi i have an akita that is 1year and ive had him since he was 6weeks he has the best nature ever he gets off the lead and plays good with all dogs around here he has never growled or barked at another dog or snapped he has been attacked by and alsation and a dalmation and a spaniel but still he has the good nature he is soo easy to look after he just sleeps all day and he gets walked 3 times a day for about 1 hour so just depends on the way u bring them up i suppose 03 Mar 2009 13:56 vena can you put that in fo on the akita pic on the all breeds club i havent got round to putting the info on it yet lol 03 Mar 2009 13:53 I have read that they can be aggressive with other dogs and, as said, very difficult dogs to own. Probably, why so many end up in rescue. I met a lady with one on a lead the other week (she also had a rottweiller) who said it had been the hardest dog she has ever owned. Now for the other end of the scale, I saw one of the heath on Sunday, off its lead, extremely friendly with my two newfies and the lady said she had come from the RSPCA. I don´t think you can generalise any breed, just have to know what you are doing and know your own dog. I heard tell of a newfie which was aggressive, yet I have never heard either of mine growl and they are totally friendly to everyone and everything. Beautiful creatures, Akitas, but too much for me. 01 Mar 2009 12:48 Hi Sue, go to my album Favourite breeds there some info on there about Akitas 01 Mar 2009 12:25 Hi Becks, yes unfortunately there are LOTS of Akitas in various rescues, they are not an easy dog to own and l wouldn´t recommend them them to an inexperienced large dog owner. They are generally good with people, very protective to family members, especially children, late 80´s early 90´s they became very popular and sadly (they had a lot of bad press ) again down to thoughtless owners, usually they are aloof with strangers, though l worked mine in obedience, to some degree hee , they got bored very quickly so it was little and often, they are very stubborn and if they decide they don´t want to do something they wont. with the exceptions´´ you Can´t let them off the lead, as there off, generally not good with strange dogs, especially other Akita´s,originally bred to hunt Deer and Wild Boar, many years ago they were crossed with the Tosa, to improve their strength and they are very strong dogs. They need lots of exercise, one of my friends does sledging, though slower than huskies they can go for a long time, mine didn´t bark often but when they did it was for a good reason, unlike gsd, there is no warning signals they just go in. A very beautiful dog, but hard work, that´s why after my two died, l stuck to my gsd. Hope this helps. 01 Mar 2009 12:03 oh good post becks id love to know more too as i dont know that much about them |
