Male kittens getting rough

Hi Cat

We recently adopted 2 6 month old male kittens, brothers. They were checked over by the sanctury vet who, due to their age, was going to give them the snip, but he said their bits weren´t big enough yet(??)
Ususally their playing fighting is cute and amuzing but the past few days it´s looked more like one trying to dominate the other. The smaller boy has started holding his brother down, climbing on his back and really sinking his teeth into his neck. I thought he was trying to mate with him this morning!

Is it time to get them done?

Hi Catherine,

Kittens will often indulge in quite rough play but you can always break it up if you feel it is becoming too much. At their age their hormones may well be kicking in and this could be what is driving the behaviour. If they are going in for their vaccines then get them booked in to be neutered while you are there. Most vets will want to wait about a week after the vaccines to allow them to settle in their system before they put the cat under a general anaesthetic.

THey are just THE best boys EVER! lol

I´m going to call the vet monday. Their second jabs are due now anyway. Hopefully he´ll get them in for the snip too, then they can run all that energy off outside, lol.

You could break them up with a squirt of water from a water pistol if they look to be getting to rough but generally as a rule, youngsters are just finding their feet and establishing their pecking order as well as learning to be adults and apart of discovering all of this,is by rough and tumble and alot of play and interaction between each other.

If their play does become more like fighting, then it may be worth popping them along to your ownvet and asking him/her to check them over to see whether thay are ready to be done.....I´m sure they will be able to advise you further on this matter if need be.

Good luck and all the best with them...they sound like they have settled in rather well anyway and that´s good to hear!.
