Rosie my catHi, Wonder if you could help,my cats tummy has swollen very big, it is quite hard, and even under her lungs is quite hard, its like she is about to have kittens, she is 10 years old, and was spayed 9 years ago, she is eating quite a lot, a bit more than normal, it started when we moved house and she would not go out so I have had to put a cat tray in the house, I have caught her eating the cat litter, the little stones cat litter, could it be that? I have since changed the litter, but she does not seem poorly at all, has she got some kind of worm or could it be the cat litter? Thank you if anyone can help. It is unusual for cats abdomens to swell but the most common causes are a build up of fluid or a lump growing inside the abdomen, both of which can indicate quite serious problems. It is highly unlikely it is due to a build up of the cat litter, she is more likely to vomit that up or for it to pass through the guts and come out in the poo. Cats will often eat unusual things such as cat litter or soil if they are nutritionally deficent or suffering with an illness which is causing an internal imbalance. The best thing to do is to take her to your vets as soon as possible for an examination and ask their opinion. They should be able to find out what is wrong and discuss any treatment options for her.
