Dog peeing a lot

Hi Cat
I hope you´ll be able to put my mind at ease a little. Yesterday it was Charlie´s birthday so I got him one of those "natural" ham bones from Pets at Home. He seemed to really enjoy it.
We then took him for a walk a couple hours later and he had a really bad case of the runs and we noticed that he was peeing a lot (3/4 - or maybe even more - while on a 30 min walk). I came home and fed him a mixture of rice/chicken/probiotics and sweet potato and that seems to have settled his stomach back to normal this morning. But he still seems to be peeing quite a lot. Should I be concerned? What other sypmtoms should I look out for? How long should I wait before I take him to our vet?
Thanks Cat!!

Hi Nicole,

It would be unusual for a treat like this to directly affect his urination and much more common, as you have discovered, for it to upset his guts and digestion. However, ham is quite a salty meat, which could have caused him to drink more and therefore urinate more. Also, if a dog has diarrhoea they will lose a lot of water in their faeces, which they need to replace by drinking more and this may therefore cause them to urinate.

If he is still urinating more today, or he appears uncomfortable in his urination then the best thing to do would be to take him to your vet for an examination. It is possible that the change in his weeing habits has nothing to do with the ham bone at all. If you do take him to your vets, or he seems better but you are still concerned, take a urine sample down for them to test. There are simple and cheap tests your vet can run in the surgery which will quickly tell them if there is a problem or not. His first urination of the day is best and the tests only require a few mls, so you don´t need to catch a lot!

I hope this helps and he is better soon.
