TitleToday i have had to rescue a sparrow that has been on its own outside for a day now. Pls dont lecture me about bringing it inside as it was the last thing i wanted to do. I am well aware that the parents are often nearby and i did monitor it for a whole day. I believe that the parents are up in the rafters above the shops below my flat, but i think the problem is that the shops are always very busy and of an evening you get a lot of hoodies hanging around. I did not want to leave it there to get stamped on by some thug. My problem is that i have contacted a wildlife reserve, vets and pdsa and none of them can take it and i would like to try and put it outside tonite but am worried that the parents wont come out at nite, im also not sure if i should feed it as i have no idea how old it is. Im gathering its a fledgling as it has its feathers but cannot fly. Pls any advice would b great. I do not have much experience of this problem but probably the best thing to feed it will be either live or dead grub worms. You can usually pick these up from your local garden centre, or maybe a fishing store. Birds will learn quite quickly to open their mouths but you often have to persuade them at first. Also, use tweezers to hold the grubs so your fingers don´t get in the way! You can also try feeding bird seed or meal, again this should be available at a garden centre. Beyond this I can´t really help you too much. If you have a local wildlife rescue you could contact them, they should be able to give you some more accurate advice, even if they are unable to take it for you. Do let us know how you get on with it. Cat 09 Jun 2009 16:36 I really hope it does not die. I have handled it as little as possible. I really dont like picking them up as usually parents are around but the nest is in such an unsuitable place and every time one of them falls out they are in a lot of danger. 09 Jun 2009 16:29 Hey, My Grandma used to look after small birds that had fallen out the nest. She used to hold them in an old towel and feed them either small pieces of bread in water or small pieces of bread in milk ..... you could always look it up on a website but a local vet should take the bird off your hands .... careful if you put the little fella out if he has your scent on him his mother will attck him. 09 Jun 2009 16:25 You could try feeding him/her little pieces of bread and soak them in water before you give them some, hope it ll go´s well.Love to the little one xx |
