Changing diet

Hello Cat,

After reading your advice on feeding I have decided to change my cats’ diet from wet food to dry food. However as I have always fed them on wet food and a little dry has been left for them to munch as and when they want, would you suggest that I gradually introduce the dry food and wean them off the wet?
Thanks

Hi Jennie,

A gradual change from one type of food to another is a very good idea. This means that the new food is unlikely to cause any tummy upsets and the cats are more likely to be accepting of it. Cats naturally are grazing feeders so they should adapt quickly to have biscuits available at all times.

Make sure that you stick to a daily recommended amount of food and don´t just keep filling up the bowls, there is no truth in the old wives tale that cats will regulate their own food intake! Also, have plenty of fresh water available as if they eat dry food rather than wet, cats will drink more as they won´t be getting as much moisture from the diet.

One of the main benefits of feeding a diet which is mainly dry food is the benefits for dental health. However, in order to get the full effects of this you should feed the better quality foods such as Hills, Proplan or Royal Canin. all of which provide excellent nutrition.
