Heat cycles in dogs

Hi Cat
I wonder if you could shed some light on my question.
I´ve been trying to research possible reasons a bitch would not come into season and other than being spayed and having hormonal problems what else could prevent her from coming into season? Grateful for any help r advice you could give!

Hi Nicole,

If your question relates to your dog having not come into heat as expected, then I would not be too concerned. Most bitches cycle every 6 months but it is quite common for them not to conform to this rule. Some cycle every 8 months, others only once a year, it can be very variable.

There are very few health problems which would cause a bitch to stop cycling, probably only severe manutrition would do it. There are medications which can be given to delay the onset on a season, but I presume if she had had these then you would know (!)
