Kidney Failure in cats - apart from prescribed food what else can I give her??

Hi, My cat Foxy, has been diagnosed with Kidney Failure. She had been drinking and weeing a lot lately, so mentioned this to the vet when she had to have her booster, he weighed her (she had lost a lot of weight) and he immediately took a blood sample, after a 10min wait in the waiting room (had convinced myself by this point that she was gonna have the worse thing ever!!), the vet advised that unfortunately Foxy has Kidney failure. After reading up about it on the internet, I am slightly more comforted that this is quite a common thing in cats, thats sounds awful that I feel comforted by this I know, but does also mean a lot of people have been through this and can give me some good advice! After leaving the vets with food specifically for cats with renal failure, and also a purse being about £80 lighter! I came home thinking that she wouldnt eat the food/our other cat will eat it whilst im out so wont know if Foxy has eaten it, and then there was the added headache of trying to stop Foxy eating our other cats food, which the vet said that she was not to eat. I asked the Vet what other food could I give Foxy, coz I know she will get bored of it, and he advised Coley (fish), and chicken. I was wondering if any of the vets on petstreet could advise of any other foods that I could give foxy, as we are sometimes away for a day or two, and need to leave some food with the cat sitter that she can put out and both cats can eat. I have to take foxy back to the vets in three weeks for ´the decision´ if she has not made any improvements. PLEASE CAN SOMEONE HELP!!!!! Many thanks in advance Cherry, Foxy and Loulou Xx

Hi Cherry i had a cat who was diagnosed with kidney problems and she was 18 yrs old and after being treated she lasted over a yr which i think was good for her age, but dont think that your cat cannot live a long happy life because it can. I gave my cat things like chicken and it didnt do her any harm at all. The vet said she lived a long time because of the luv and care that she had from me. Have u tried giving your other cat the same food as foxy. I know its difficult to give one cat one thing and the other something different, i have 2 cats and 3 dogs, animals are the same as people if they are going to get ill they will. There are people out there with pets who dont look after them properly, as in dont give them proper food or look after their well being and they seem to live for ever and dont get ill, im not saying that these animals deserve to get ill not at all, so are all these more expensive foods for pets really better for them or not? My cat who died i never had vaccinated and lived 19 yrs. She died in 1995. My dogs have boosters up to date. I did read on the internet a couple of weeks ago that vets abroad are doing studies on animals vacs and reckon that they could be doing more harm to animals than good. How old is your cat? anyway i do hope that your cat will be fine and i believe with luv and care that people give the pets has a big impact on them. Do keep me informed. xx

Hi Cherry

I hope Foxy makes a full recovery, poor little thing. It´s unbelievable the medical problems so many cats have.

If you post your comment on the vet section, Cat the vet will come back to you with good advice.

Good luck
