whose walking who??has anyone any great tips or advice for re-training Marley to walk niecly not pull like he´s never been out before. Marley is a gorgeous 14mth old husky who we´ve just adopted and unfortunately he hasn´t been lead-trained very well (his last owners admission),we´ve just got him a harness because he came to us with a choke chain and i personally dont like them, but although i realise its very early days i would love Marley to be enjoying his walks and not getting constantly reined in!! We did think it could just be the initial excitement of being out but even after a long long run he still persists.Sorry for rather long 1st post but i so want to get him and my family ´happy´ together. Huskies are completely different to any other breed, I have tried everything on Shiya and the things I listed below worked like magic! Don´t worry Huskies are trainable, mine is trained and I have met several others that behave like a trained german shepherd or collie would, it just takes a lot of work and time. Find out what his favourite treat is and start working the basics with him, I fiound going to an obedience class really helped with getting the basics and moving on from there but if the cost is worry then you can also watch husky trainers on youtube ect... and they show you how to train them. Don´t feel he will never be trained because he will as long as you work hard at it, and get everyone in the house to help train him as he will learn that everyone in the house is the alpha dog. Just keep positive and strong, don´t let him push you around by giving you puppy eyes, play biting or howling. Shiya has tried it all, you just got to be determand and strong! I hope it goes well for you, do let me know. I have had a husky in the past so I do know what I´m talking about, haha! Coco and Shiya x x 24 Aug 2009 16:38 Hi, this is Shiya´s owner. Shiya used to pull loads! We took her to obedience school and they told us a few tricks, like having chicken (Shiya´s favourite) or treats in your hand whilst walking and close your fist, let Marley smell your hand and then walk, give small pieces every now and then so that Marley stays next to you. It worked at first but then she started to jump up on us. We got a police training lead (from a pet store but pets at home should have it, was £22 but worth it!) which is leather and allows you to hook the lead around one shoulder and it sits on your chest. It stills gives the dog abit of lead to sniff around. We also got a training harness which stops dogs from pulling, when the dog pulls it tightens under their legs, it doesn´t hurt them just stops them from moving forwards. We only had it on Shiya for 2 months and now she doesn´t pull at all! (We got it from Pets at home, was i think around £12-15). It has really helped but it is NOT a harness for running as she cannot pull, so we have a normal harness and the none pulling harness. Obviously because they are born runners and pullers they firstly don´t like the harness but it does not hurt them, it shouldn´t take too long for him to learn but as he is not lead-trained it may take longer than Shiya. Hope it works! let me know... Coco and Shiya x 22 Aug 2009 15:51 my dog is small but she pulls alot!! and shes stong its a nightmare for me so for you with a bigger stonger dog i can imagine how bad it is i use the halti head coller she stopped pulling a soon as she got it on its worth a try they come in bigger sizes so you should beable to find one that fits let us know how you get on 22 Aug 2009 15:42 Gentle leader or dogmatic, most definitely. It is a headcollar designed like a horse´s bridle, but without the bit. If the dog can´t get his nose up, he cannot pull, doesn´t matter how big and strong he is. As Vena said, he will hate it and will keep trying to paw it off. Just stop walking, stand next to him till he gives up. Keep the lead short, so your hand is down. They are a wonderful invention and well worth the effort of getting the dog used to. My newfoundland, Ferdie, is 3 stone heavier than me and he can´t go after anything with this on. 22 Aug 2009 14:56 Huskies natural instinct to pull, that´s what they were bred for,and they do need Lots of exercise, you could try a Gentle Leader he will hate it instantly but WILL get used to it, overall huskies are not obedient , they can be trained to a certain degree but will always see if it is to their advantage or not.,like most Spitz breeds they are very independent, stubborn and persistent,he will learn to walk calmly with regular routine and a lot of patience. When he pulls, try turning and walk other way till hes beside you, then repeat, it will take lots of time and patience but hopefully hell learn. |
