the dreaded diarrhoea-and now Kennel cough!

Hi- my 9 month old puppy has been to the vet, 2 weeks ago she had sickness and diarrhoea, and was obviously un well. It seemed to clear up, and then returned last friday, Back to the vet, with special diet .anti biotics.
This morning instead of getting better her diarrhoea has been very liquid. maybe my home made cooking chicken and rice with pure chicken stock has been too rich.! but no sickness.
so I´ll get some more diet from the vet.
My question is, really, does this sound like a virus to you? or something more long term? I´m going to send a sample in next time I go, but I´m really struggling witht he fact the dog has diarhhoea all over the garden- children will never be allowed to play out! and worry about the germs inside the house too.
Also to note was that she has sticky eyes at the beginning.

Hi Cat, Thanks for the reply. I think the diarroeah is beginning to clear- results are not yet back from the vet. Howver, my poor dog has now been diagnosed with Kennel cough!
She has just started on antibiotics.(had one) but her cough has got worse- she is acting fine though- not unwell at all. any tips on helping the cough to stop?

Hi Beth,

It can be frustrating when diarrhoea doesn´t clear up quickly in animals, mainly from a practical point of view, as you have pointed out!

The vast majority of cases of diarrhoea, especially in young animals, clear up with a standard treatment of anti-biotics, probiotics and a bland diet. They are usually a result of them eating something that has upset their stomach and with young dogs especially eating all sorts of disgusting things, it can happen fairly often!

I think the best thing to do is what you are already planning, to take a sample of her faeces to your vet for further analysis. This will show up any unusual parasites or bacteria which need specific anti-biotics to treat them. Do stick to the bland diet as well, this can be very helpful in settling diarrhoea as the guts find it very easy to digest, so they can concentrate their energies on repairing themselves. The ones from the vets are best, as they are balanced with all the correct minerals and vitamins, vital if they are needed long term. However, it is possible to make a home cooked diet of rice and chicken but I would steer clear of the stock, as this will add a lot of salt, which could cause a runny tummy in itself.

Let me know how you get one
