Guinea pig with no eyes

My Guinea Pig just had 3 beutiful babies 2 days ago. One of the babies does not have eyes just dents where the eyes should be. The baby is feeding well and otherwise appears to be in good health. Could you tell me why something like this has happened and should I give some special care as she is obviously blind???

Hi Estelle,

Baby Guinea Pigs, as you obviously know, should be born with their eyes open and are immediately very independent. It would be very rare indeed for them to be born without eyes. I think you should take the baby to your vets for an examination. It is possible that she has an infection in her eyes that is sticking the lids together, your vet would be able to diagnose this and treat it. However, if the eyes really are missing then I see no reason why this pig, provided it is otherwise healthy, cannot live a full life. It shouldn´t be too difficult to adapt a cage so she can find her way around.

Let me know how things go, I would be really interested to know how she gets on.
