Hi Chloe,

Ear mites are common in young kittens, they usually cause a thick, black wax to appear in the ears and can make the ears very itchy. The medicated drops from vets are very effective and will usually clear the infections within a week of being started. It is also helpful to clean out as much wax as possible. The ear drops, as well as treating the infection, really help to soften and loosen the wax, so it is much easier to wipe out with cotton wool. (However, only wipe away any wax in the outer ear, don´t be tempted to clean any deeper)

Ear mites can be very itchy and cats will often make themselves very sore with scratching. This should settle quickly with the ear drops but if he makes himself very sore, it might be a good idea to pick up a Buster Collar for him from your vet so he can´t reach his ears. To make it easier to apply the drops and clean the ears, try wrapping him in a towel with just his head poking out, this way he won´t be able to use his legs to scratch his ears (or your hands!) while you are treating him.

If the ears don´t settle after a couple of days of treatment as directed by your vet, it would be a good idea to take him back for a check-up.
