Hi David,

This is fairly common problem in young, female dogs and is generally to do with the anatomy of their immature vulvas. In an older bitch the vulva has a ´funnel´ type shape which is designed to help the urine flow cleanly away from the body. In younger dogs it is more ´tucked up´ and this means that sometimes small amounts of urine can pool inside it. This urine quickly becomes jelly-like and is often shifted out when the dog next passes water.

This gel discharge isn´t necessarily harmful and its volume varies from dog to dog. However, it can leave come bitches vulnerable to infections and these can be painful. If this happens the dog will often lick at themselves excessively, urinate small amounts often, lose their toilet training and some will cry out when they urinate. The problem clears with anti-biotics but some individuals can have repeated bouts until they reach maturity.

If your pup is otherwise well then there may be no cause for concern at the moment. However, it would be sensible to mention it to your vet when you next go, or drop in urine sample. If there are any problems they should be able to quickly tell from a simple, in-house test and let you know what treatment may be required.
