Is cheese harmful to cats?

Hi everyone. I know this may sound odd, but my cat Scamp absolutely LOVES cheese, in fact the stronger the better, he loves it so much he even understands the word cheese, and yesterday he amazed me by sniffing everywhere in the living room until he found the exact spot where I had previously laid a plate down that had cheese and crackers on it. The thing is, I only give him cheese occasionally as I know it´s fattening (or is to us), but does anyone know if it´s harmful to him?

a lot of cats quite like cheese but i´d agree with the comments here suggesting that it should only be given occassionally. now and then shouldn´t hurt him :-)

My daughter used to have a cat that not only loved cheese but went potty for cheese and onion crisps! not that she got any of them very often but just the sound of a crisp bag had her running to you.

Daisy loves the smell of BUTTER on my toast! She always comes along to look at it and sniffs hopefully...lol! I don´t let her eat any of my breakfast though.

I don´t feed cheese to my cat Daisy but her Whiskas treats contain chicken and cheese so I suppose cheese is ok for cats? I think Mary has a good point about some cats being lactose intolerant. I used to buy cat milk for Daisy when she was a kitten, but now she is fully grown I give her a little bit of semi skimmed cow´s milk as a treat. Her tummy doesn´t get upset by this at all.

I think that as long as you don´t feed it to your cat in large quantities and frequently, then the odd little piece can´t do any harm.

Cats cannot tolerate the lactose which is present in cows milk (hence why it´s bad to give your cat milk in a dish), as this normally causes digestive upsets,so this is why feeding cheese should be kept to a minimum and as a treat more than anything.

My Sing love´s cheese but she only has the odd little piece now and then and sometime´s Phoebe will eat a little too but my other two Ylang Ylang and Thai aren´t keen on cheese at all (LOL).
