my dog is retching as if he is trying to bring up a hair ball. The vet says it could be a bug and gave him some painkillers and antibiotics . Im not convinced . he seems to be breathing quite heavily . Any ideas?

Thanks cat . He has been breathing much more heavily since seeing the vet. Will take him back in the morning . Does the breathing give you any clues? thanks john.

Hi John,

If you have taken your dog to your vet, then obviously they have been able to examine him and so have a much better idea than I what could be the problem. Gastric upsets and infections are very common in dogs and a frequent cause of vomiting.

If he is no better then you should let your vet know and take him back for a follow-up check. Sometimes we don´t always get the diagnosis right the first time or more symptoms develop (such as the change in his breathing pattern) that gives us more information on what could be wrong.
