Title

Tilly my 11year old dog untill a few days ago was doing all the normal things a dog should do. all at once she seemed to become disoriented, not responding to any communication, staring at the walls trying to get in to small spaces very tired, it looked as if she had given up the will to lve. I took her to the vets who said she had this ailment begining with a V she would get over it as other dogs suffer this. It is now 6 days since I took her to the vets, there is no improvement. I will be having Tilly back to the vets. Has any one elses pet had any thing like this Thanks.

Hi Sylvia,

From your description of your dog´s symptoms and what the vet said, it sounds like she has a problem called ´Vestibular Syndrome´. It can be very sudden onset and common symptoms include a head tilt to either side, flicking eyes and sometimes the dogs struggle to stand up at all because their balance is so badly affected. It is caused by a malfunctioning nerve in the head and usually has no underlying cause. There isn´t really any treatment that can be given and most cases will correct with time but most will show a significant (but not necessarily total) improvement in a week or so.

Other problems which can cause older dogs to become disorientated, stare into space and lose their balance indluce a stroke, liver disease and senile problems.

If she is no better you definitely need to take her to see your vet again and discuss her condition with them.
