puppy constipated

hi, my 7 month old pup was really struggling all morning to have a pooh, when i noticed he had a large hard lump of pooh stuck to his bottom, i had to cut it away and bath him to clear blockage and his bottom looks really sore. is there anything i can do to stop this happening again? he has bakers dried dog food for small dog for his meals and on a sunday he has meat and veg with us as a treat and also once a fortnight i treat them to liver but not often as i heard its not good to give them too much. please help.

Hi Lorraine,

When an animal is constipated they often strain for some time to poo but when they do they produce small, hard nuggets which don´t usually stick to anything. If he had a large amount of faeces stuck around his bottom then often this is started by the opposite problem, diarrhoea or soft poo sticking to the fur as it comes out and then not allowing any more to pass.

Now you have clipped and cleaned his bottom, pay close attention to the consistency of his next poo, it should give you a clue as to what has been happening. However, if it does not soon return to normal or his skin remains sore then you should take him to your vet.

The dog foods sold in supermarkets are rarely the best available and I would always recommend going to a pet shop, where you will find a much wider and better quality range. The foods in supermarkets are on the shelves because they are cheap and are heavily advertised. Those which have kibbles of different colours are packed with colourings and hidden fats and calories and are generally of poor quailty. Especially for young dogs, good nutrition is vital and brands I regularly advise feeding brands such as Hills, Proplan and Royal Canin.
