Asthma Medication

Hi Cat,

my cat coco has been diagnosed with asthma and for the last year has been receiving steroid injections, the first 2 lasted 6 months each but the last only 3, and we have therefore decided to put her on to steroid tablets instead, in the hope that we can control the dosing a little better rather than just pumping her full of one big dose each time. my vet prescribed Prednisolone tablets (5mg) which seem to be doing the trick. in order to save costs i would like to order these online in future but each site i look at seems to have 2 different types, Prednicare (Prednisolone) and Prednidale (Prednisolone). my vet doesn´t seem to know the difference and the pharmacy says that if my prescription is for Prednisolone then i can order either. this seems a bit hit and miss and i just wondered if you had any idea if there was a difference in these products or whether Prednicare and Prednidale are simply brand names?

my vet also suggested using an inhaler on coco instead of tablets or injections but having looked in to the prices of this i just simply cant afford it! the cheapest i can find the medication is from an online store in canada but factoring in VAT charges at customs and the post office customs handling fee, id still be looking at about £80 every 4 - 8 months depending on whether coco needed one puff a day or two! i simply can´t afford this :-( i have managed to get a massive bargain, in that a lady from america is sending me an Aerokat plus a canister of albuterol (to give when she´s actually having an attack) and she has only charged me £6.00 postage, but i still can´t afford to keep buying the Flixotide inhalers at that price, so looks like we will have to stick with the tablets.

thanks for your time Cat

Hi Cat, thanks for clearing that up!

i have looked in to the inhaled meds a great deal but it is just soooo expensive - and trust me, i feel awful about making a decision to keep coco on steroids with possible side effects purely for financial reasons, but i just have no choice :-( the cheapest i could find cannisters of Flixotide in the uk was £55 from my local pharmacy but they only provide 120 puffs per inhaler and if she´s having 2 puffs a day then that will mean paying out £55.00 (plus £7.50 prescription charge from my vet) every 2 months!! i will use the aerokat and albuterol i get from the lovely lady in the usa when coco is having an attack to help aleviate the problem, but really think i´m going to have to stick with the tablets.

the only reason i´m getting them online rather than through the vet is because i´m having to get a load of other meds online and i save about £50 getting the whole lot on line rather than through the vet. crikey my animals are a sickly bunch, bless them!

Hi Sarah,

Predicare and Prednidale are both brand names for the steroid prednisolone and both come in 5mg tablets, either should be fine if they have been prescribed by your vet. Prednisolone is a very cheap drug and while you may make savings at an on-line pharmacy they probably won´t be much more than getting them from your vet.

The modern way to treat asthma in cats is to use the inhalent medication. It is in general more effective than steroids and also safer, especially in the long term. However, normally with long term use the dose of steroids can be greatly reduced (and increased in the short term if the cat has a flare up), which makes them safer and if you cannot afford the other medications it is a perfectly acceptable treatment and certainly better than repeated long acting steroid injections. Albuterol in a AeroKat inhaler is a common and effective way of treating attacks and a good ´half-way house´ compromise. I would advise you to be cautious about buying medictions from the US over the internet and do make sure that the treatment is genuine as there are a lot of fakes and low quailty medications out there and the regulations are more lax in the UA than the UK.

I hope this helps, let me know how you get on.
