Titlehello my name is lizzie, i have just got 2 boy rats which are brothers, brian and stewy, and i have had them about 2 weeks now, and they dont seem to like me!! lol. they are happy to take food out of my hand and let me stroke their heads etc.. but as soon as i try to lift them out of their cage they squeak and try to bite me, so then i panic and leave them alone, they were not handled alot by their last owner, so has anyone got any tips or advice please as i love them to bits and they are lovely animals, thanks lizzie xx From the topic: Comments Post a comment in this discussion: 27 Jun 2010 09:41 hi lizzie, rats are very complex creatures - although i dont have much experience with rats, a lot of my friends do. i have rabbits - one of which was so scared it used to kick if i tried to pick him up. just think, if they havent been handled and they come to a new loving mummy its going to take them time to get used to you and trust you. every time you put your hand in their cage - put a nice little treat down - then they start to associate you with treats. make sure you dont let them eat it out of your hand as ive just read they can associate it with food and nip you out of excitement too. i think just spending time next to them and getting them used to you slowly is the best bet, and after a while they will start to trust you more, try not to panic when they nip - remaining calm will show them your not a threat and their threats dont scare you. i just googled a bit of advice and every where says rats are very intelligent creatures and will learn very quickly. xx |
