I got him a cooler mat http://www.puddlepetcare.co.uk/acatalog/Dog_Cooling_Products.html Stays cools for ages. There are also the same sort of thing that you can get to go round their neck that stay cool for ages but not sure what they are called as a friend from the US sent them to me. I also keep a little spritzer water bottle in the fridge and spritz the dogs with cool water now and then. Have to say I am so relieved to be out of the city this summer. Not only much more comfortable in Scotland, the breeze off the water ensures we all stay cool too. 01 Jul 2010 08:10 Both mine are black, but one is panting a lot and one not at all (either that or he is doing it quietly). I just wish it would break and cool down so I can take them out. They keep looking at me with that lets go out, look! I feel very guilty, but I know they would never be able to cope. 30 Jun 2010 22:09 it might just have more of an effect on him bless dogs are funny ..... my 2 try to eat them but when they find out they are cold they spit them out lol 30 Jun 2010 21:57 Member Removed it,s just that Prince my black dog is panting very heavy Rocco my brown dog just a bit yet Lucky my fawn dog not at all so i am wondering now if the heat affects dogs more with darker coats.I tryed them with ice cubes they liked playing with them so i guess as long as they was throwing around the kitchen that they liked them as toys lol 30 Jun 2010 21:50 i wouldnt worry ... just keep doing what your doing and keep putting water cold water down my 2 like chewing on icecubes ...they seem to like playing with them too 30 Jun 2010 16:24 Dave, they don´t actually have a fur coat on! Many people think that they must be hot under all that fur, but in fact their coats are needed to cool them as well as keep them warm, so long as there is no excessive fur. I am very glad I don´t have high energy dogs as my two have just been sleeping all the time. I was just worried about the heavy panting in one and the absence of any panting in the other. 30 Jun 2010 16:21 Yes Dave, first close the windows as it is letting the heat IN, then close your curtains. You´ll find the room cools quite quickly. My dog doesn´t like water on her, so I use baby wet wipes to stroke over her ears and neck and back, and it seems to help a lot. I only tke her for short walks morning and late evening because she is getting old now and can´t take the heat so well. |
