any numbers for 24 hour vets?

im really worried. darwin had his second needles about a week and a half ago and since, has developed a rather large and swollen red lump. - like a boil/spot on a human. he does look to be in some discomfort like hes trying to get at it but can´t because its on the back of his neck. if i touch it he really doesn´t like it. i will book him in first thing tomorrow but ive only really noticed it today. does anyone know what it could be?? im so worried..

This isnt uncommon as your vet is telling you, lots of dogs have reactions like that to their jabs (although vets will always tell you that reactions to vaccines are uncommon as vaccinations are their bread and butter - me, cynical? No....). It should just go down in time.

I´ve just posted something else in a thread about parvo regarding the vaccination debate. I think it is wise to give your dogs their initial vaccines separately to reduce the risk of over vaccinating the system in one go. As I only vaccinate for Parvo and Distemper my vet had to get me in single shots of both to give Ferris (who has been my only pup) which he had separately. Lots of dogs do fine with the mixed vaccines when pups so I´m not trying to be an alarmist, I´ve had 2 dogs with vaccine damage though and feel quite strongly about it! I would think the lump will disappear in a few days in this instance though.

Ahhhh, that´s OK then, I´m glad it was something simple and nothing too worry about (LOL)!.

hi mary he has been microchipped too yes, but they found the hole for that one and it was just a tiny scab. this really is a VERY large boil looking thing. its about 2 cm big. its gross. but they said its probably a localized reaction and because hes so small the vaccine probably reacted a little bit worse. they checked everything out and he was fine, apparently just a reaction. i was so worried about my little man, but the vet was fab. she even got a second opinion and they both said the same thing!

Meant to say.......has he been Microchipped ????......it´s not an reaction to that is it, because I have know this to happen before in some dogs and cats, just as you have described ???????????????.

I agree......virtually veterinary practices run 24 hour cover/emergency service.

It could be a reaction to the vaccine but it´s impossible to say without looking, your vet is the best one too confirm what it is one way or another.....just bathe it regularly with warm water with a little salt added to cleanse, or if you have any Hibiscrub or Tamodine, that will be just as affective.

i found that out last night vena!! i popped in this morning, they said hes had a pretty bad localized reaction at the injection site which is pretty rare. lump has gone bigger today and they´ve given me a liquid painkiller to give to him for kittens and puppys - but said as hes eating fine and is definitely not lethargic its nothing to worry about, although i still am..

Usually if you ring your own vet, you get a out of hours number.

Don´t know but think you should post this again in vet chat Lauren. See if Cat has any answers for you. Could it be the injection site.
