Hi all, I´m after a little bit of advice.Recently I have been a bit poorly. I have to have some surgery in my mouth and depression has returned. My dog Tonic is so inteligent and senstive, he is picking up on my depression. The more I try and not let him see the tears, the more I feel guilty. Recently Tonic is not behaving the way he used to, he at times, pees in the house when I go to bed and refuses to go in the garden to do his doings. I realy don´t want my illnesses affecting him. Does anyone know of a way, where I can prevent him from picking up on my low times, or if there is anything you could suggest? We have gone for many a long walks up the mountains (which he loves). I always meant to ban Millie from the sofa but I´d miss the cuddles too much and in winter she keeps my feet warm, hehehe! 12 Jul 2010 11:07 Thank you for all the well wishes and advice. Tonic seems to be ok and I have been spending more one to one time with him. Told tell anybody but we have been having cuddles on the sofa when watching, lighthearted TV. He normally is not allowed on the sofa ;-) 10 Jul 2010 15:07 Member Removed so sorry to hear you not been well------ I have a system alert dog (K9) & he knows when I am down, even if I don´t look down I know you probably don´t feel like laughing but try this rent or buy a comedy DVD one that you seen before which you know makes you laugh, by watching DVD & laughing this will reduce your depression & Tonic will start being his old self again xxx 09 Jul 2010 11:40 All animals are exceedingly sensitive to our moods and emotions, as has been said by most here, try not to be too over anxious, stressed or sad around him, but meanwhile, put both yourself and him onto Bach Flower Rescue remedy, 10 drops directly onto your tongue and 5 onto his...this wonderful little composition is totally safe to use and good for all affects following, upset, trauma, fright, shock and stress!. I´d also advise that you both go onto Skullcap and Valerian tablets too, available from Dorwest herbs, these are a natural calmanitive and sedate and calm without having any side affects such as drowsiness or becoming addictive. 2 each daily should work wonder´s or if you can get it - obtain the actual tinctures and mix together in a little water - drink 8 drops of each in a little water at least 3 x daily. I am sure that once you have undergone your surgery, thing´s will start looking up for you but the above preparations will also help you yourself, prepare your self mentally to face what´s ahead!. Don´t be sad, just be positive and be strong for both you and Tonic´s sake....I know it´s hard ´my love´..but keep smiling!. xxxxxxx 09 Jul 2010 11:05 So sorry to hear your feeling down, yes dogs very quickly pick up our emotions and react in different ways, don´t be quick to blame yourself, you seem to be doing the right thing by taking him out as usual, once you start to feel better im sure he will to.Hope you feel better soon xx 09 Jul 2010 10:45 I think when a dog is sensitive to mood change like this there is not much you can do. I´d stop feeling stressed about it as that will increase his anxiety. My first dog Jack was very sensitive to my moods (I also suffer with depression), and would be by my side constantly when I was low. I just let him do that, didnt ever try to suppress how I was feeling and it seemed to just work somehow. I also felt guilty sometimes when he looked worried but learnt that you cant change this sort of thing. I hope your mood picks up soon. 09 Jul 2010 09:27 oh hunny im sorry to hear your not your useal self dogs have an amazeing abuilty to pick up on our feelings they know when we are sad or upset ... i think spending more time with him spoiling him .... go for some extra long walks it will do the both of you some good .... hope your op is a minour one and i hope your feeling better soon |
