breed specific legislation and the u.s. militaryMember Removed i was just watching a television show called "pitboss"...which is about a man called shorty...who runs a rescue organization for pitbulls in southern california...he is a little person...and all of his employee´s are little people...so he also runs a talent agency for little people called "shortywood". while at first i thought this show was going to be rediculase...like a side show...it turns out the man and his staff have a real love for the dogs..and i now look forward to watching regularly...well in his last episode...he got a visit from a man (who was a soldier about to be deployed) and was told by the base commander that he had to get rid of his dog, because it was a pitbull.....the u.s. military has b.s.l....dogs that are banned on us bases around the world are...pitbulls, rottweilers, wolf hybreds, chow chows, dobermans, and others....breeds vary from base to base...but the ones that are constant are the pitbulls....these dogs were on the recruting posters from world war 1 and 2, and now they are banned from the bases ??? the u.s. military should be ashamed...these dogs have served our nation proudly, and i don´t believe they have turned their back on these beautiful dogs. imagine how you would feel...your being deployed to a combat zone...and your base commander says...oh yeah...you have to get rid of your dog too...shamefull.....i am a u.s. navy veteran...and all of the men in my family have served in the military...so don´t think i´m against our men and women in uniform...but this is shamefull.... From the topic: Comments Post a comment in this discussion: 04 Aug 2010 01:32 Member Removed yes tina...you could have them in the uk back then also...but things have changed...the media has demonized them since...i believe the change came in the late 80´s-early 90´s...not sure when the military bsl came into law...but its in place now... 03 Aug 2010 19:09 Member Removed I find this very hard to understand as when we lived on a American air base in Germany (DAD was in the American air force) we had Pitbulls 6 in all, Ziggy, Peggy,Daisy,Ruben,Tommy & Benny & they always came with us when we at to move to a new bases, this was in the 60/70s so perhaps rules have changed since then. 03 Aug 2010 17:53 Member Removed well mary it could very be gremlins my computer keeps throwing me all over the place.lol 03 Aug 2010 17:47 Not sure why there is a HUGE gap between my comment below....gremlins me think´s (LOL)!. 03 Aug 2010 17:46 Hi Christine....like I said, I don´t know the in´s and out´s of the politics and gangs within NI - but I do know about the workings of BSL in such places!. It is made perfectly clear both here in mainland Britain and in NI that the DDA is in force and that 4 banned breeds are on the list for definite - breeds (& their types allegedly) that I have mentioned below previously. Under the DDA 1991, it is illegal to own, breed, sell, exchange or give away any of these 4 banned breeds & their crosses - that said, there are plenty of dogs (PB´s) that are here alive and well in the UK and in Ireland - the DDA ban has not achieved what it intended (cause the breeds to become extinct within the UK over time) because of underground breeding by breed enthusiasts/lovers and sadly many scrupulous persons who want the dogs for misuse obviously and to make easy money!. Under the amended DDA 1997, owner´s of such breeds if caught by Police can apply throught the Courts to have their dogs listed (IF deemed safe) but must have them fixed and registered - hence again the theory that such dogs will eventually die out. Such listed dogs must be muzzled and kept on leads when out in a public place - that´s the Law but many people will flout this rule too if and when they can. Personally speaking, I wouldn´t dream of dobbing in any PB owner´s/breeders - why should I ???. I thankfully know sensible, knowledgeable and responsible PB people here in the UK, who never allow their dogs to fall foul of the Law and who respect deeply what they are lucky to have - even though they are not meant too. A breed doesn´t automatically become illegal if it bites - the Government made 4 breeds and their crosses illegal back in 1991 and that´s how it has remained, they being the PB/PB type, a Tosa, a Dogo, or Fila Brasileiro, UNLESS it´s one of these then it´s NOT a banned breed!. Anyone with a PB should be aware that their dog can be seized at any one time and their dog face destruction and themselves prosecution for owning an illagal breed - if they are already on the ´Index of Exempted Dogs then they MUST conform with the rules of this Act, or they will face the serious consequences. There are Police that do (amazingly and thankfully) turn a blind eye to such dogs if they see the dog is under control and is not causing a problem to anybody - they may be far and few between and most are in rural area´s but they will ignore unless there is a problem - that is down to them and beside´s which they themselves may be unsure as to the correct identity of the animal - a classic style ´Staffie´ can look/be deemed as a PB or PB type BUT it is a full pedigree Staff!. So to summarise you comment below, unless you have one of the 4 banned breeds your dog whether it´s a Rottie, Dobe, GSD or Staff, etc is NOT illegal. If your dog bites someone it will NOT be deemed an illegal breed. IF you dog is listed then you should conform with the rules including the complusory muzzling and lead control when in a public place. It is down to the discretion of the individual Police forces whether or not they wish to pull someone over regarding the ID of their dog and if they do, what step´s they wish to follow despite there being set and strict regulations and law as to what they should do!. I hope that has helped answer your queries below.....if not, please feel free to email me and we´ll discuss this further meanwhile you may wish to take a look at my group http://www.petstreet.co.uk/group/44153.SO%20IS%20YOUR%20BREED%20SAFE%20_____ for further information and details on BSL here in the UK!. 03 Aug 2010 15:52 Member Removed mary when you refer to the council housing esates in northern ireland it was here that the sectarian violence was based as to the leislation it was like taking a sledge hammer to crack the preferbiable. no one in mainland britain is quite sure were they stand they dont know whether there dogs are illegall or not.i know of 2 pitbulls within walking distance with whom the police have not been bothered are those doga illegal or not they are certainly not muzzled or is it a case of those dogs only become illegal if they bite someone.because the police in our area do not bother with them.so here we specific dog types prescibed so therfore are they illegal or not i dont know. 03 Aug 2010 15:26 To be perfectly honest with you Christine, I´m not too sure about the Secretarian gangs to do in all of it (LOL) - that is not my forte I´m afraid.....but the DDA in NI is quite different to our own and they failed to amend it as we did back in 1997 (making certain dogs eligible to be entered on the list if Courts allowed) - instead they made tighter restrictions for many more breeds especially on Council housing estate´s and whatnot (following more dog attacks on children from specific breeds) - now the Control of Dogs Act applies to all of those breeds across the board of NI!. 03 Aug 2010 15:07 Member Removed ah mary i have just clicked on the link and read what you were talking about i knew that there was some form of legislation but thought it had been introduced here not northern ireland which when i think about it i recall it was to do with the sectarion gangs using the dogs for sectarian violence which led to the government bringing in the legislation over there in a more rigid form.mind you i could be wrong about this to i only think this was the reason from what i recall at the time. 03 Aug 2010 14:45 The link which I have added below show´s the rules that apply to certain breeds under the ´Control of Dogs Act´ that is currently in force in Northern Ireland - but it isn´t applicable here in the UK. http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/environment/animal-welfare-and-control/control_of_dogs Click on the link and scroll down and it will specify the breeds and the rule´s that their owner´s must (should) adhere too - the list does include the breeds that you mentioned in your original comment but again this does only apply to NI - I hope that helps!. And please, you have absolutely no need to apologise for your comment - it´s just a slight error that is quickly rectified (LOL)!. xXx |
