Beach donkeys need home for Winter.

The Donkey Sanctuary is launching an urgent appeal today to help find winter homes for eight beach donkeys from Great Yarmouth.

Parker’s Donkeys, based at the Norfolk resort, have been struggling to find winter accommodation for eight of their donkeys, Alfie, Casper, Cracker, Darcy, Peanuts, Hector, Noodles and Troy.

Determined to give their animals a ‘well deserved break’ the owner, Hayley Bulgin, has called upon The Donkey Sanctuary to help find accommodation for her donkeys up until March 2011.

Shelagh Steel, The Donkey Sanctuary’s regional welfare officer for the East of England explains the basics: “Hayley is desperate to find suitable homes for the eight donkeys as her field gets too boggy over the winter months. We hope to help her find homes, and we’re not necessarily looking for a home that can take all eight donkeys, but at least pairs, as donkeys are companion animals.

“You’ll have to consider if you have the time and commitment required to look after them and you will need an acre of well fenced grazing with a shelter, fresh water supply and electricity. Donkeys are wonderful, affectionate creatures, so caring for them can be most rewarding.”

The Donkey Sanctuary can provide free support and advice to anyone interested in helping out. If you would like to find out more about providing a winter home to Great Yarmouth’s beach donkeys, please contact Shelagh Steel on 07836 756117 or call the Welfare Department at The Donkey Sanctuary on 01395 578222.
