Dogs that hang from trees by their jaw. Thoughts?

On my way home tonight i looked out of the car window and saw a medium sized Staffie/pit?? hanging from a tree by its jaws, this dog just seemed formidable in the way in which it hang, then pulled and pulled while still hanging. The traffic was slow and so watched for a good 4 minutes as this dog just used all its weight to try and bring down the branch which was a large one.

I also noticed the owner, stood there arms folded and almost as if to say ´yeah thats my dog!´ (although i could be wrong but thats the impression i got) he also seemed to be saying something which made the dog pull again.
Now ive let my dogs do it before, especially when Bless (who is 10) was younger, she liked it and i saw no harm. Today though i looked at it from a different perspective and feel it does the breed no justice and is not really beneficial to the dog aside from it enjoying it. Had i been a small breed owner walking through that park i would have been very worried!

What are your thoughts people?

I cannot understand anyone even thinking of doing that to a dog. Would they like the same done to them.

Melinda you hit the nail on the head! they do need to behave 10x better in public, its for their own good and the good of the breed IMO.

V,yeah many have been destroyed and now many boroughs are putting circular fencing around trees to protect them from such attacks.

Why teach you dog to hang onto something like that? Play with toys or sticks yes but tree´s that´s a big NO in my books.

Apparently London boroughs have lost mature trees worth £10,000 each to dog attacks.

I would never allow our staffy to behave in such a manner. Whether it´s ´for fun´ or not, why is vandalising a park/tree ok?

It´s pretty obvious when people encourage it in a public space that they´re showing off about how hard their dog is.

If you want your dog to play tuggy, that´s what dog toys are for. We never encourage Shabba to behave in any way other than civilised, she already has people thinking she´s some devil dog so IMO their behaviour needs to be 10x better than other dogs.

I agree with you Pat, I would walk the other way also. I dont go to my local park for the same reasons so I do understand.

It´s a shame, but I too would have thought the worst and gone in the opposite direction with my dog. The other week I saw a bloke walking down a busy main street with an akita offlead and walking at least 10 paces in front of him. I have no problem with bully breeds or large breeds - I love ´em all, but if I´d have been walking towards this bloke with my dog and/or 4yro daughter I´d have been a little worried.

Sue, try seeing it from my side, I am 59 with small dogs and a group of young men, with dogs hanging from trees. You know I have no problems with the bully breeds. Do have to say a staff with a young girl went for my S-J at Earls Court station on the way home from DD. Like always a few spoiling it for a lot

I personally think with that is going on with the bully breeds seeing a bully hanging from a tree people automatically think the worst. Even if your dog is doing it for fun some people just dont see that.

My JRT´s use my rotary washing line (when their toys blankets are hanging from it) to swing from but I would not let them hang from tree´s in the park.
