Hi Jacqueline,

You can give pets human cod liver oil and in fact I recommend it regularly to my client. One teaspoon or one capsule a day is about right for most pets and because of it´s stinky fishy smell, most pets take it no problems!

However, it does depend on what you are giving it for as to how appropriate it is to give ordinary cod liver oil. For example, for pets with slightly dry coats, who are arthritic prone breeds or who do a lot of exercise it is an excellent supplement but for those with more specific problems, for example stiffness and arthritis which is becoming obvious or clinical skin conditions, it is not ideal to just give alone and more specialised veterinary joint or skin supplements, or treatment prescribed by a vet is much better. If you are considering giving cod liver oil because you are concerned about your dog in some way, you should discuss this with your vet first as there may be a more appropriate and effective way of approaching the problem.
