We´re putting him on a diet and trying to get him out more but he just steals Rusty´s or Jigsaws food. I know you´re all probably thinking well you shouln´t of fed him so much but it´s just when my back is turned he steals his brothers food. don´t know what to do please help! I think the suggestions Sarah and Christine have given you are excellent and you should definitely try them. There are now several brands of food on the market which are designed to aid weight loss in cats and sometimes it can be easier to feed all the cats on this, rather than trying to restrict it to just one. It won´t do a slimmer cat any harm to eat a lower fat diet but can be very good for the fatter one! Also, making them work for their food can be an excellent way of making them burn calories and is often particularly effective in more food obsessed cats. Use a treat ball or puzzle toy filled with their normal daily ration. We get a few toys but the pup soon finds them and tears them to shreds. thanks for the tips i´ll be sure to try them out! 25 Jan 2011 09:38 i have a fatty cat that does this too, not helped by the fact that coco (the non-fatty) eats slowly and a little at a time. the only thing we find we can do is stand nearby coco while she eats and when she has finished what she wants we pick the bowl up. we then re-offer it to her a short while later, again staying with her so that kenny (fatty) can´t eat any. we do leave biscuits out (the low-calorie kind) all day and he grazes on those. at first we were worried he´d just eat all of them at once but once he realised they were there all the time he just ate a small amount. we find that feeding them in different areas helps and also having more than one bowl of biscuits down so that he goes and searches for them helps. you could try making toys to encourage him to "hunt" for his food. a very easy one is to make a pyramid of toilet roll tubes stuck together (with the tubes lying flat rather than upright) and then putting a dry biscuit in a few of the tubes, your cat then has to work out and work at getting the biscuit out with his paw. you can also by "treat balls" which you can put a few dry biscuits in that he knocks about and they pop out, this again encourages him to work for his food and also gives him some exercise. if he doesn´t like going out then you should add a few sessions of play time in to your daily routine, playing with balls and dangly toys to encourage him to run around and jump etc. 5 - 10 mins of this a few times a day will not only help him lose weight but will also increase the bond between you and him. |
