colour coded bandanasYour thoughts please ? First I want to say I am not anti dog off lead as long as they have good manners and well trained. But..... not all dogs or people enjoy an unknown bouncy dogs running full speed jumping all over them and then the owner of the dog looking hurt or cross when you ask for Rover to be put on a lead or shocked if your own dog tells their dog to *****off in doggie language! I can only speak for where i live but we have a high report of dogs off lead attacking dogs on lead or reports of complaints from dog owners who have allowed their dogs to run up to strange dogs (on lead) and only for that dog to snap at them and then get a mouthful of abuse from the on lead dog owner..... MY own dog has a history of back problems that can flair up at anytime and is on medication so can be a little unpredictable when we have the playful bouncy dog situation and yes he will tell them to ***off (never bitten) but wouldn’t anyone if you are in a little discomfort??? I have been reading about in the U S that some states dogs with dog/people aggression wear a red bandanna just to give a pre-warning to other dog owners to please put your dog on lead or don’t stroke me! I like this idea and thought this idea could be used for other reason like maybe ...say.. a light blue bandana to show a dog is recovering from an injury, operation or ill health ..but meaning the same Please don’t allow your dog to jump all over me or your child to stroke as It may scare me and react in a negative way... I know a few elderly people who just don’t want another dog running up to them not because of their dog but afraid they will be knocked over so maybe another colour say yellow just again saying the same please lead or control your dog while i walk by.... I know its manners to lead your dog when you see other dogs on lead but some people just need a little prompting ? its an idea I’m thinking of taking to my next Dog watch meeting....would love your thoughts Thanks in advance Paula x From the topic: Comments Post a comment in this discussion: 13 May 2011 18:35 yes, maybe your right :-( but my boy is now on meds for life due to attackes and when i read reports at work dogs killed or badly injured and the law is so b****** weak in this area! i just wanted to do something! i know Dogs trust are working hard to change the law so lets hope things will start to change 12 May 2011 22:42 I would love a solution to this problem My little Peke Shingi has been badly attacked twice by dogs off leads. The first time both my Pekes where on there leads when the attack happened. And poor Shingi spent 6 weeks in the vets and a massive £3000 vet bill. And 10 weeks ago she was attacked again and is still being treated for it and so far this bill has come to over £700. She now goes into her doggy pram when dogs that we don´t know approach us because the last time she was attacked the dog came over in a friendly manor. Sniffed at the other 5 dogs that where with us but didn´t even sniff at Shingi it just went straight at her 12 May 2011 07:27 Member Removed I talked to my dog training class, about the use of red bandanas, they all thought that the same that it would not work, one of our trainers is Canadian he said that it never worked in Canada, all it did was confused, the elderly & young childred as they thought the dogs were friendly with wearing the bandanas. 05 May 2011 09:06 Think it would be a massive task trying to get the message across, i still don´t see how it would help if a loose dog is running toward you, ive had that happen many times whilst mine have been on lead, the owners usually say ´oh! he only wants to play´( yea sure!) but if the dog on lead dosent it can lead to trouble, so even if i was aware the dog was dangerous it wouldnt make any difference. 04 May 2011 21:39 The idea was to promote the colour code first and then how it can be used as a visual warning tool to show dog owners that are still at a distance so have time to recall their dogs and put on lead. I have spoken to a lady who lives in America who thought the red bandana to show a dog is dog/people aggresses was used nationwide and was shocked when I had never heard of it! Apparently it is very successful in the states. When I read the reports of many dog on dog attacks from dog off lead on dog on lead in my area I thought it may be worth a try and may even help prevent some very life changing horrifying attacks. 04 May 2011 16:56 Afraid i cant see it working either, how would it be possible for all the general public to be aware what the different colours meant,it would also be very confusing especially as quite a few people have them on their dogs already in diff colours plus it would not stop dogs attacking or running up to people. 04 May 2011 07:59 Member Removed Paula I can´t see this working as owners like myself have bandanna´s on their dogs when out walking, each one of my dogs have a different coloured one, its not the dogs that are at fault here its the owners of the dogs that are let off their leads, as some owners can´t read, we have a woods near me that as in big red letter PLEASE KEEP YOUR DOGS ON LEADS, yet you see 100´s of dogs roaming free off their leads. If I am in the park where dogs can be let off their leads & other dogs come bouncing over to my lot & won´t leave them alone, after their owners call them away, I shout out in a very loud voice, " ITS NICE TO SEE YOU HAVE FULL CONTROL OF YOUR DOG(S)" this makes them embarrassed enough to walk over & put their dog(s) back on their leads. Just thought of another reason why different coloured bananas wont work is a lot of people like myself are coloured blind, I can see colours but not different shades of colours, lets take blue all the light & dark blues look the same colour to me, its the same for all the other colours. I do think that if owners don´t have control of their dogs when off their leads do need addressing, but it will be more logical to make these owners take their dogs to dog training classes, so they can let their dogs off leads knowing that they will come back when called, also this will or should stop dogs running off to annoy other dogs/owners. |
