Walkies

When you take your dog(s) walkies, do you get them all excited, or just keep them calm.
I am a big believer on keeping my dogs calm, I put their harnesses on them then continue doing housework, until they have calmed down, once they are calm I put their leads on, then we go walkies, where as my sister works her Rottweiler up to a frenzy, by saying over & over again you want go walkies, does Ben want to go walkies yes come on then let´s go walkies, by the time she as him on a lead he is over excited & is pulling & jumping up all the way down street to the park, she then wonders why people cross over the road & other dog owners are to scared to walk pass her & Ben (her 6 stone rottweiler).
Surely having a calm dog when out walking is better then having a over excited dog, that is pulling & jumping up all the time when walking down the street.
So what do you all think, calm dog or over excited dog.

I so try to keep them calm and fail. There are too many things that can signify an outing before I even get near leads--picking up a handbag, keys or ipod, or changing shoes (especially wellies!) all mean a potential outing. However, once leads are on I only have to say "pack walking" and they are quiet with Cass on left, Holly on right & off we go. Bit noisier if we get in the car--´cos that probably means a trip to the river!! Yay!!!!!

Millie and Maddy do not need encouragement to be excited. I make both dogs sit before their leads go on. If they keep jumping around I put the leads down and just stand there til they calm down and sit. I would have to be mad to encourage Millie to be excited about going for walkies. She definitely doesn´t need to be encouraged to get excited as she is already a high-energy dog.

Basically the same as me Paula, but I get on with my housework until they settle down, its a lot easier taking a calm dog rather then a excited dog xxxx

I put the lead back on the hook until Duke calms down and if i take it off and he runs around again it goes back on the hook until he sits calmly, it only takes one back on hook as he has learnt to sit calmly means he will go for a walk much quicker :-)

I know what you mean Skye as annoying squealing noise, that´s why I put their harnesses on, then continue doing housework until they are quiet but its mainly Skye, once quiet & calm I take them out.

Mine seem to know when they are going without saying a word, Kyra is ok but Heiko gets all exited one would think hes been beaten the way he screams , i just make him sit till hes quite ,once out hes ok.
