how to work out the size of filter for a fish tank

Hi i am just setting up a fish tank nothing fancy and i am trying to work out what size filter i will need the fish tank is 48 inch in length by 12 inch wide by 18 inch height i have worked it out to 38 gallon or 175 liters approx but i get lost at working out the filter size as some web sites i have looked on say 4 times the flow of water per hour and others say 6 times the flow of water per hour i hope that makes sense any help would be gratefully received

ok mate...here goes...he said that all the water needs to flow through the filter 4 times per hour, and if its a 30 gallon tank...it requires a flow rate of 120 gallons per hour...so with yours being a 38 gallon tank...he would get a size larger..like a flow rate of 150 gallons per hour...he said always go bigger if its close...i hope this makes sence to you...i´m lost
