Natural instincts of cats

My 4 year old cat,Daisy, has wet food for her dinner and dry kibbles for breakfast. She always goes to her scratch post to sharpen her claws before tucking into her meal...even though it is already for her to eat. After she has eaten, she always wipes one paw on the floor. I have heard that in the wild, cats do this to leave their scent so that other animals stay away from any unfinished food. I wondered if other cat owners have noticed this about their pets? It is funny to see her sharpening her claws!

Thanks Claire- that does seem to make sense to me. It is amazing how cat´s instincts are so good. It does make me laugh when Daisy sharpens her claws before each meal though!

Hi Evelyn ... I don´t think its a scent thing to make other animals stay away. They couldn´t make other animals stay away. I think it goes back to being predated on themselves and they bury any remaining food to cover their tracks. Just like burying their toilet. It is instinctive and even one paw scrape ... does the trick. Smudge does it. As if "I will be a cat and bury this food, but not too much, because I don´t need to bury it really ... and can´t anyway because its in a bowl on a hard floor ... but I´ll give it a quick scrape anyway" !!!
