Garlic for dogs?Hello Cat Hope you are well. We have had a flea explosion here--hot humid weather has exacerbated it. Frontline seems to have lost its effectiveness but after treatments, combing, treating the animal beds, floor and 1 rug I have left at last seem to be on top of the problem. I´ve read that garlic given to the dogs might help keep fleas away. Is it OK to give them a small clove each a day, crushed into their food? They already have a cod liver oil capsule a day each. I can´t see the cats eating garlic but I´m sure I read somewhere it is not good for cats. Can you clarify who can eat it and who can´t? It´s fresh garlic from local growers. Many thanks. I have no idea if it worked but it made his mix smell great! However, I am always reluctant to advise giving garlic to dogs after a client of mine fed her dog a dose of powdered garlic every day and made him very sick with it. Not withstanding the fact that there is no medical evidence at all to support the belief that it deters parasites! I know it is very frustrating when you have a flea problem and feel you are doing everything right but there is usually a chink in the armour somewhere which is letting them proliferate. One of the most common is an untreated animal having close contact with your pets. The fleas, once one the treated animal, will die but can cause some problems before they do! If you think you are on top of things now I would continue with monthly spot-on treatments, regular washing of the bedding and annual treatment of your house and if you have any flare ups, look for a suspect outside of your home!
