My cat is nearly 10 years old and is scratching and washing all the time when she´s not asleep. She also licks the carpet as if she is eating something. She doesn´t have fleas as have treated and checked her. My other cat is absolutely fine with no same symptoms at all. Its starting to drive me loopy let alone her!! Any ideas anyone!!!!!

You could clip her claws slightly or ask your vet to do so.This might prevent her from scratching herself too badly!

I read somewhere that new carpets and new furniture give off a smell that cats dislike- the smell wears off after some time. I wonder if your cat is trying to get rid of the smell? Or if she is eating the carpet fibres that could be a condition known as pica. I think you should take her to the vet for a check up.

Please ask your own vet who will need to check your cat, or the vet on this site, who will probably say take your cat to your vet. If your cat is grooming excessively it can be due to stress or a skin complaint other than fleas such as an allergy. As for the licking the carpet I don´t know. My cat used to eat dirt, but it was FIV and seeking minerals!! Best wishes.
